Marbled endpapers. 360 pages including index. A collection of La Fontaine's fables in verse. This volume contains a commentary on La Fontaine and the importance of his fables, as well as a life of Aesop. La Fontaine is considered one of the key fabulists, and one of the most influential early French writer, who served not only to inspire and shape French literature, but also fabulists of other countries as well. In FAIR condition. Minor to moderate scuffing to the covers, especially along the extremities. Small dark stain on rear cover and a small to medium area of darkening along the upper fore edge of the front cover. Some soiling. Small hole in the first layer of leather at the upper front cover near the hinge. Leather worn along the hinges and splitting at the upper and lower edges though still intact. Bound in a small print floral cloth with gilt embellishments, as well as a ¼ leather backstrip with extensive gilt ornamentation. In VERY GOOD condition. Light soiling to the covers. Some darkening. Moderate scuffing and bumping to the extremities. Some pulling and fraying to the corners. Text clean and solid with previous owners' inscriptions on ffep and light creasing to the table of contents page. Nice copy of this volume of German folksongs in VERY GOOD condition.

Second blank endpaper with a rectangle cut out along its upper edge. Previous owner's signature present. Text block solid with minor scattered soiling and foxing.

With a few black and white photo plates throughout. A journal devoted to the Folklore Society and folklore, containing papers on various topics. This issue contains "Head Hunting among the Hill Tribes of Assam," by T.C. Hodson, with photo plates, and describing the custom of headhunting of various tribes in Assam, although serving to dispel misconceptions and myths of the practice. Also present is an illustrated article "Customs of the Lower Congo People," by John H. Weeks, describing his observations while in Africa; and a short piece on the Straw Bear custom, with photo. This number devoted primarily to the mythology of the Oglala Dakota Native Americans, including myths and tales recalling history of various tribes. Included are myths from the Oglala Teton Dakotas, the Cheyenne River Tetons, the Yanktonai and the Yanktons. GOOD condition. Moderate chipping and loss along the edges of the wrappers, with a 1 inch rectangular area missing from the upper rear spine. Minor toning and soiling.

A rendition for children, of various fables by Aesop, including the horse and the lion, the tortoise and the hare, the mischievous dog, the man and his wig, etc. FAIR condition. Heavy fading, moderate scuffing and staining to the covers. Spine toned. Minor soiling. Cloth frayed, chipped and split along the extremities and spine. Text block shaken but intact. Child's doodles, names and scribbles on the endpapers and first and last few pages, with a few doodles/lines in the text throughout. Scattered staining throughout, with general soiling. General foxing.

New York: Hurd and Stoughton, 1869. Cloth. Good. Brown cloth with illustrations in gilt on the front cover. Xix, 186 pp. Black and white illustrations by Henry L. Stephens and Gaston Fay throughout. An extensive collection of nursery rhymes attributed to Mother Goose, preceded by a history and lineage of the Goose/Vergoose family. The last part of the book contains music that would accompany many of the rhymes, followed by historical notes on many of the pieces. GOOD condition. General fading, minor soiling and scuffing to the covers. Cloth frayed and worn at the corners with heavy pulling, fraying and splitting at the head and tail of the spine. Minor scattered soiling in the interior, with minor toning.

Keene, NH: Ralph Page, Publisher, 1958. Wraps. Good. Blue-green printed wraps. 52 pp., plus ads. With a few illustrations and musical scores throughout. A single issue of this magazine devoted to folk dances and folk music. This issue discusses dances of the maritime provinces of Canada, including Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland. Included are descriptions of the dances and terminology used in calling the folk dances, as well as examples of music to be used for the dances. With some history and background, as well as names of the dances. Ralph Page sought to preserve folk dances in New England and elsewhere, using this magazine, among other venues to discuss the dances. The University of New Hampshire hosts a yearly Ralph Page Dance Legacy Weekend. GOOD condition. Heavy uneven fading to the covers, especially along the edges. Minor wrinkling. Paper rather browned in the interior.

Black and white illustrations throughout, with a few fold out color plates. All text in Japanese. An edition of Japanese short stories from the post late Heian period. VERY GOOD condition. Minor toning and edgewear to the book. Slipcase in good condition with some browning, staining, soiling and edgewear.

With 12 colored paper cuts mounted under clear plastic. Text in Chinese and English. A work perhaps issued for tourists, providing brief anecdotal legends recalling the history of the Eastern Zhou Dynasty in China during the 'Warring States' period. This book also promotes the art of paper cuts as practiced by the Yu country region, with a description on the rear inside cover explaining the art and the skill of the Yu artisans. The English translations of the text are a bit rough. The Zhou Dynasty in China was the longest lasting dynasty in Chinese history, that saw the first use of iron and the evolution of written script into its modern form. The Eastern Zhou Dynasty is associated with a decline in royal rule (Wikipedia). VERY GOOD condition. Some scuffs and scratches to the front cover and lower spine. Minor general fading. Small woodcut illustrations throughout. A collection of fables, including some by Aesop, gathered by R. Dodsley and accompanied by a lengthy historical introduction. Separated into three books, Ancients, Moderns and Newly Invented (original). POOR condition. Heavy scuffing to the leather, with some soiling, fading and staining. Heavy wear to the leather along the edges, spine and hinges, with chipping and loss. Heavy cracking to the spine, with loss of leather to the head and tail. Ursula written on the rear cover. Covers very tenuously attached. Text block very shaky, with many leaves tenuously bound in. All endpapers missing up to the title page. Names and doodles on the inside covers. Some writing on the last page. Very very worn copy.

Front interior hinge loose, with rear interior hinge cracked and separated from the binding. Scattered minor foxing and soiling in the interior. Binding a bit shaken, with several page gatherings protruding from the text block.

Drawn from Greek, Roman, Spanish, Italian, German and Eastern books, this work presents a selection of jokes and jests from various countries, both for amusement and education. Preceded by an introduction discussing the sources of the jests, as well as tastes in various countries (asserting most of the jokes from Germany were dull). Compiled by John Pinkerton, a Scottish scholar, cartographer and numismatist. POOR/FAIR condition. Both covers DETACHED. Heavy scuffing to the leather along the extremities. Spine flaking, chipped and worn. General darkening. Several owner's notations and names in the front, with an old bookseller catalog description glued in on an endpaper. Scattered foxing throughout.
