Lyon: Amable Leroy, 1805. Full-Leather. Fair/No Jacket. Two parts in one book. Bound in brown leather with very faded gilt ornamentation and titling on the spine. Marbled endpapers. 360 pages including index. A collection of La Fontaine's fables in verse. This volume contains a commentary on La Fontaine and the importance of his fables, as well as a life of Aesop. La Fontaine is considered one of the key fabulists, and one of the most influential early French writer, who served not only to inspire and shape French literature, but also fabulists of other countries as well. In FAIR condition. Minor to moderate scuffing to the covers, especially along the extremities. Small dark stain on rear cover and a small to medium area of darkening along the upper fore edge of the front cover. Some soiling. Small hole in the first layer of leather at the upper front cover near the hinge. Leather worn along the hinges and splitting at the upper and lower edges though still intact. Minor loss of leather at the head and foot of the spine, with an area of darkening at the foot. Spine is faded and has lost most of its gilt work. Front endpaper very tenuously attached; the rear is somewhat tenuously attached. Some soiling to the reverse of the ffep, with a small pencil notation. Second endpaper with a rectangle cut out of it at the top corner where perhaps a signature has been removed. Owner's signature on title page. The text block is solid and intact with light browning and minor soiling sporadically throughout. Solid copy in FAIR condition.
