Description:
London: Faber & Faber, 1999. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. 12mo (tall). Full burgundy paper boards. 83 pp. Fine condition. Alcestis is the story of a king, Admetus, who is able to escape death because his wife, Alcestis, has volunteered to die in his place. Ted Hughes began his translation of Euripedes' play in 1993, almost completing it then, but breaking off to fulfill commissions for English versions of Oresteia and Racine's Phedre, and for the book that came to be called Tales from Ovid. As was true of the other works, Hughes' Alcestis goes beyond mere translation to an inspired rethinking of the story in terms of his own vision of human suffering. His additions to the text include an expanded burlesque treatment of Hercules' drunk scene and an episode involving Prometheus and his vulture. Hughes took up the play agan and finished work on it a few months before his death in 1998.

Description:
Baltimore: The Johns Hopkins University Press, 1991. Soft cover. Fine. 8vo. Second printing. Soft cover. 448 pp. There was no simple agreement on the subject of "myth" in classical antiquity, and there remains none today. In Approaches to Greek Myth, Lowell Edmunds brings together practitioners of eight of the most important and contemporary approaches to the subject. Whether exploring myth from a historical, comparative, or theoretical perspective, each lucidly describes a particular approach, applies it to one or more myths, and reflects on what the approach yields that others do not.

Cambridge, Massachusetts: Harvard University Press, 2007. Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. 18mo. The Loeb Classical Library #502. ix, 559 p.p. Green cloth boards. Dust jacket chafed to covers, joints and corners. The eleven plays by Aristophanes that have come down to us intact brilliantly illuminate the eventful period spanned by his 40-year career, beginning with the first production in 427 BCE. But the Athenians knew much more of his work: over 40 plays by Aristophanes were read in antiquity, of which nearly a thousand fragments survive. These provide a fuller picture of the poet's ever astonishing comic vitality and a wealth of information and insights about his world. Henderson's new, widely acclaimed Loeb edition is completed by this volume.
