This scarce report contains information and statistics on Small Pox, Yellow Fever and other contagious diseases on ships in the Port of New York. In 1872, there were 680 cases of Small Pox, 274 of which were fatal. Hoffman Island served as a 'place of detention and purification' for well persons arriving from infected emigrant ships after arriving at nearby Ellis Island.
