Melbourne; London; Toronto: Heinemann, 1957. Second revised. Hardcover. vg. Large octavo. XI, [5], 502pp. Original printed dust-jacket over cloth with silver lettering on spine. Frontispiece portrait of Heinrich Himmler. Publisher's logo on title page. In this remarkable work, Reitlinger explores the complex social machinery that allowed the SS to operate-the administration and internal rivalries, the SS field divisions, German military intelligence, and the organization of the concentration and death camps. He shows how the SS was embedded in the basic government of the country during those years and how its members were not so much lunatic killers as loyal citizens doing the bidding of a country that had gone insane. Powerful, objective, and based on original German documents and interviews-including information from Himmler's statistician-this book rejects the SS as an alibi for a nation's responsibility in the most far-reaching racial massacre in history. This work is illustrated with 3 maps and…

Göttingen, Germany: Steidldangin, 2005. First limited edition. Softcover. Very good to fine. 16/200 pp hand-numbered on colophon. Folio (13 x 11 3/4"). 58 folding pages. Original black half-cloth over black wraps, housed in publisher's printed gray cardboard slipcase. First published in 2005, this limited edition "...features nearly two decades of Paolo Roversi's hugely influential studio portraiture... Within the confines of his Paris studio, Roversi photographs subjects in 8x10 Polaroid format, often allowing his images to fade before fixing them to their substrate. His long exposures at close range harness an aesthetic from the earliest days of studio photography, but with a renewed urgency that wavers somewhere between history and apparition. Stripped of the usual accoutrements of studio portraiture, Roversi's subjects push back with a vulnerable intensity that reveals as much of the photographer as of the model. The images collected here function not only as a series of individual portraits,…

Leiden: Brill, 2013. First edition. Octavo. x, 246pp. Index and 17 page bibliography. Text in English. Green buckram lettered in white with red band near top of spine. A fine, as new copy. In Saadya Gaon: The Double Path of the Mystic and the Rationalist Gyongyi Hegedus offers a new perspective on the thought of the most significant medieval Jewish thinker of the pre-Maimonidean era, Saadya Gaon. Saadya's important philosophical works belong to two distinct traditions: his main work is written in the style of rationalist theology (kalam), but he is also responsible for composing a commentary in a neo-Pythagorean tone. In addition to contextualizing the two traditions and analyzing their Islamic parallels, the book makes the argument that Saadya consciously constructed a two-layered model of thought and harmonized two styles: one based on sensation and logic, the other on a specific prophetic insight.
