PRESENTATION COPY
OF A FUTURE-WAR NOVEL

KIPLING, Arthur Wellesley. The Shadow of Glory: Being a History of the Great War of 1910-1911. 8vo, original gilt stamped blue cloth, pp. xvi, 440. London: Alston Rivers Ltd., 1910.
First Edition. The second of the author's two future-war novels, and much scarcer than his first, The New Dominion: A Tale of Tomorrow's War (1908). These two novels are the sum total of his literary output. Kipling (1885-1947), an American, both of whose books were published in London, saw service as a Major in the American Ambulance Service during WWI. He is buried in Arlington Cemetary, his wife next to him. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author: "To Miss Sophia Curtiss with the warm friendship and appreciation of Arthur Wellesley Kipling April 22nd 1910." The Courier-Journal, Louisville, Saturday, May 28 1910, carries on p. 5, a long review of the book, saying that Kipling, an American (who had an aunt in Louisville), was educated in Paris, and was living there at… Read More

Description:
ELIOT, George, pseud. [EVANS, Mary Ann]. Silas Marner: The Weaver of Raveloe. 8vo, original crimson cloth (lightly soiled; spine extremities strengthened, corners little rubbed, a few slits at the joints & front end paper slightly cracked at fold), pp. 364, [4], 16 ads. Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood ad Sons, 1861.

First Edition. Despite the binding faults noted above, this is quite a decent copy of a classic novel many of us read in school, nowhere near as bad as we have suggested. Eliot's opening sentence sets the tone: "In the days when the spinning-wheels hummed busily in the farmhouses-and even great ladies, clothed in silk and thread-lace, had their toy spinning-wheels of polished oak-there might be seen, in districts far away among the lanes, or deep in the bosom of the hills certain pallid undersized men, who, by the side of the country-folk, look like the remnants of a disinherited race."
