Description:
J.H. Kellogg (1852-1943) was an American doctor and the inventor of the modern breakfast cereal. This book is a discussion of women's health at the various stages of life, and also discusses aspects of education, exercise, and diet necessary for health in women, as understood at the time. It is a fascinating artefact of beliefs about women's health in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This copy is in poor condition. The engraved leather covering the boards is worn and torn in places, most notably on the corners, and the leather on the spine has almost separated entirely, and been significantly torn at the top and bottom and has a large tear down the centre. Inside, however, the book is excellent shape, with a tight binding and bright text and plates. The fold-out anatomical diagrams are in excellent condition. However, it is missing the series of plates that should be in the back pocket, and the back pocket itself has been almost torn off entirely. Nevertheless, an interesting source… Read More

Description:
An account of one of the most infamous legal cases in Canada in the twentieth century. Sir Arthur Currie had led the liberation of Mons from the Germans in 1918, the last year of World War I. This effort cost many lives in the Canadian Corps which Currie led, and as a result for years after the end of the war Currie continued to be blamed for these deaths.
Things came to a head when W.T.R. Preston wrote an editorial in the Port Hope Evening Guide in 1927 criticising Currie, and causing him to bring a charge of libel.
The Final Day, the Final Hour is an account of the events prior to this infamous trial, as well as of the trial itself, and includes some of the major figures in Canadian military, legal, and political history of the twentieth century.
Written by Robert J. Sharpe of Picton, ON, the author is able to provide unique insight into the nature of the legalities in question given his role as the Executive Legal Officer of the Supreme Court of Canada, and his years of teaching in the Faculty of… Read More

Description:
Archibald Lampman (1861-1899) was a Canadian poet born in what was then known as Upper Canada, and is counted amongst a group of early Canadian poets identified as the "poets of the Confederation" as a result of their close temporal proximity to the foundation of Canada as a country.
In addition to writing pieces for the Toronto Globe newspaper, Lampan wrote nearly three hundred poems later in his life, only some of which were published before his death. The majority of his poems were published in periodicals, but Lyrics of the Earth is one of three volumes of poetry which he published. He was best known for short poems on natural themes, and there were to be his poetic stock-and-trade, despite unsuccessful attempts at longer, narrative poems of an epic bent.
This volume of Lyrics of the Earth was published by The Musson Book Company Ltd. of Toronto in 1925, and includes and introduction by fellow "poet of the Confederation" Duncan Campbell Scott. He writes in the introduction that the motivation… Read More
