It is unclear whether this is a separate hand or Culross's own from on an earlier occasion--it looks exceedingly similar, and it's not otherwise signed. Barbara Cook Taggart is the granddaughter of Mortimer Cook who made a fortune in Santa Barbara and was the town's first mayor, and then founded Sedro on the Skagit River in Washington. So there is a northwest connection, circuitously. Hersholt (1886-1956) was an actor best known for starring on the long-running radio series *Dr. Christian* and in the film *Heidi.* He served as the president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and he was also a book collector: some of his books, particularly his Hans Christian Anderson collection, are now held in the Library of Congress. This book has his signed bookplate on the front pastedown. Uncommon signed, and uncommon edition in general, distinguished by being profusely illustrated in black and white by Peterson. Originally published in 1955 in the U.S. and now a classic of American nature writing, this book details the 30,000-mile journey by Peterson and his British colleague/counterpart James Fisher in 1953 around the edges of the United States and into Mexico, a one hundred-day journey to see and assess its natural splendor. They went south to the Gulf and then north to British Columbia. A fine book in very good plus jacket with slight toning/soiling to spine and top edges. .
