About This Item
Houghton Mifflin (T), 1980. 4th Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. Association copy, inscribed generously on the dedication page in red ink to the person who spearheaded the book's production at Houghton Mifflin: "For Morton Baker -- Terry -- This book has a great deal of you in it. With our gratitude, Roger Tory Peterson, Virginia Marie Peterson." Virginia's signature is in her separate, equally lovely hand--unusual to have her signature as well. Morton Baker is among those thanked in the third to last and penultimate paragraphs of the acknowledgments, e.g.: "In addition to the skill of these craftsmen and the production department of Houghton Mifflin, under the direction of Morton Baker, I have drawn on the expertise . . ." A nice association. Near fine with a touch of rubbing to corners in a similarly near fine jacket. // Wood (+) River (=) Books specializes in place-based and environmental literature, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions.

About Rural Hours
Rural Hours (formerly Wood + River = Books, est. 2019) specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, environmental literature, and contemporary essay, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. We draw our name from the popular-but-then-forgotten book by Susan Fenimore Cooper (published in 1850), generally considered the first work of environmental creative nonfiction by a woman in the U.S. We are interested in challenging and expanding the canon of environmental literature and finding books that tell remarkable stories and illuminate the tradition of writing about place and natural history.
