J. P. Skelly & Co., Philadelphia, Pa., 1871. Hardcover. Condition: Good. 85 pp. Last five pages and rear free endpapers scribbled in pencil. Front free endpapers and frontispiece is missing. Slight foxing typical of age. One steel engraved plate at page 72. Outer cover red cloth with medallion of publisher's initials on front and rear covers. Gold gilt on spine is mostly worn. The story was first published in England in 1867. The original 1867 version lists the other children's stories mentioned on the title page and identifies the author as Edis Serle. No other copy of this 1871 Philadelphia version has been found on the internet.

Hardcover. Very Good. First US edition of his first book. Author's edition on verso. Some copies have ads on eps. This is the state with plain eps. Spine is soiled and crown of spine has some edge wear. Front and rear boards have faded some. Eps have tanning but book is otherwise internally clean. Front fly-leaf has small chip to upper right hand corner. Rear eps has some cracking at gutter but book is bound quite solidly. Small bookstore stamp on inside of front board.

Text clean, no foxing, lightly yellowed with age, no prior owner attributions or markings in any of the volumes. Illustrated with 54 wood-engravings, including a a depiction of the author on the frontispiece of volume one. Gilting on front cover and spine of each volume shows various evidence of shelfwear. Speckled outer edges.Volume I has a small tear near tail of spine and contains: The Deerslayer, The Pathfinder and The Pioneers. Volume II contains: Last of the Mohicans, The Prairie and The Spy.
