This is the simultaneous paperback release.  Ashley Montagu was a British-American anthropologist and public intellectual known for his progressive stances on race and gender and his criticism of creationism. Hardin was a populations ecologist at UC Santa Barbara renown for his often-anthologized Science essay "The Tragedy of the Commons" and for his sometimes controversial stances on overpopulation. They may have overlapped briefly at UC Santa Barbara in 1962 and 1963. San Francisco: Four Seasons Foundation, 1964. 1st Edition. No Binding. Fine. A 12 1/2 x 9 5/8 inch broadside, a black photo-offset of the poet's holograph poem "Nanao Knows" on white textured stock. This broadside is one of three that were sold at the legendary June 12, 1964 "Freeway Reading" at Longshoreman's Hall in San Francisco, which is perhaps second in SF Beat mythos only to the seminal Six Gallery Reading. The reading featured Gary Snyder, Philip Whalen, and Lew Welch. Gary Snyder was just back from Japan, which was in part the impetus. Produced by Donald Allen at the beginning of his editorial career, these broadsides represent the first Four Seasons Foundation publications; Allen went on to found Grey Fox Press and edit the influential *The New American Poetry* anthology which touted the Beats. Each from an edition of 300 signed by the poets. "Nanao Knows" honors Snyder's great friend Nanao Sakaki, the Kyoto poet later dubbed "the godfather of Japan's hippies." A fine copy.

Morehead, sincerely, Alfred Runte, Yosemite National Park, California." Uncommon signed, and fun that it was inscribed in Yosemite. Runte is a prominent environmental historian and was an advisor to Ken Burns on his National Parks documentary. Second printing, 1981. Inscribed by the author on the title page (recipient's name not quite legible) and dated in the year of publication.  Uncommon signed. A comprehensive look at the National Park Service published on the hundredth anniversary of the founding of Yellowstone NP. With a short foreword by the then-director of the NPS, George Hartzog. Everhart was a NPS historian at a number of sites and then became Assistant Director of Interpretation and finally Assistant to the Director for Policy. In a second edition issued a decade letter, NPS director Russell Dickenson wrote that Everhart's credentials for interpreting the NPS were "as good as a man can have." A very near fine book in red cloth with silver lettering with lightest bumping to upper corners; in a very good jacket with wear to spine ends and corners.

This book won the John Burroughs Medal for natural history writing in 1960. An early book on urban nature. Better known as a sportswriter, broadcaster, and radio personality, Kieran was quietly also a dedicated naturalist and this book is a nice legacy on that front. A very near fine book with a touch of rubbing in spots to edges of cloth boards; in a very good jacket with edge wear, a few short tears, and darkening to spine..

A collection of essays selected from those that Fosburgh wrote as the founding editor of *The Conservationist*, the official publication of the New York State Conservation Department. It explores the wildlife and rural life of New York and one particular "Forest Preserve" and along the way "reveals a fresh philosophical attitude toward conservation." A book that highlights the large mammals of Alaska, as Murie as a wildlife biologist for the National Park Service, which he worked for 32 years; there are chapters here on grizzly bears, wolves, lynx, arctic fox, caribou, wolverine, and Dall sheep. The book won the John Burroughs Medal for natural history writing in 1963. Along with a slew (slough?) of Florida recognitions, including induction into the Florida Women's Hall of Fame, she received the National Wildlife Federation's Conservation Science Award, the NY Zoological Society's gold medal for achievement in biological conservation, and the Teddy Roosevelt Conservation Award. Inscribed to no recipient, but laid in is a signed notecard (ALS) in which Schaller thanks the recipient for taking part in the event and shares how honored he is to have received a gold medal from the "society" -- possibly the World Wildlife Fund, which did recognize Schaller in this capacity. The note is eight sentences and is signed "warm regards, George." The card also has handmade African-esque art on the front. Schaller, who in 2023 is 89 years old, is one of the world's most recognized biologists and conservation champions, won the National Book Award in Science for "The Serengeti Lion," and was notably profiled in "The Snow Leopard" by Peter Matthiessen, which also won the National Book Award. Uncommon signed. Martha Hunt Robertson Huie was the wife of prominent journalist and writer William Bradford Huie, author of 21 books and known for his World War II and Civil Rights reporting. She was an art and art history professor and an outdoors-woman. Wilson and the Huies were Alabama natives (both William Huie and Wilson are members of the Alabama Writers Hall of Fame), and perhaps that was the connection. This book is Wilson's late-in-life autobiography, describing "both his growth as a scientist and the evolution of science he has defined." He was one of the most essential ecologists of the twentieth-century, and he was also twice the winner of the Pulitzer Prize. Uncommon signed, and probably scarce in this edition. Art historian Hans Huth fled Nazi Germany in 1937 and remained in the U.S., where he eventually became an advisor to the historic branch of the National Park Service and then joined the Art Institute of Chicago in 1944 for a twenty-year tenure, becoming research curator and finally curator of decorative arts. His research focused on the history of nature conservation and this book, Nature and the American, originally published by the University of California Press in 1957, was the culmination of this long labor, an early volume on the U.S. environmental movement and aesthetics. The cover photograph of a man in front of Niagara Falls is by Huth's wife, which suggested that figure standing before the cascade is the author. A very near fine paperback, tight and clean.

This book was acquired from a Pennsylvania bookshop near Michael Mann's home. A blockbuster run of blurbs from Greta Thunberg, Leonardo DiCaprio, Al Gore, Bill McKibben, and Don Cheadle among others. Michael Mann is distinguished professor of atmospheric science at Penn State. In 2019, he received the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement, often called the "Nobel Prize for the Environment."
