About This Item

Lincoln: University of Nebraska, 1972. First thus. Softcover. Near fine. A first thus paperback, signed on the half-title page: "To dear Helga and Hans, another Hans, Feb. 15/72." Uncommon signed, and probably scarce in this edition. Art historian Hans Huth fled Nazi Germany in 1937 and remained in the U.S., where he eventually became an advisor to the historic branch of the National Park Service and then joined the Art Institute of Chicago in 1944 for a twenty-year tenure, becoming research curator and finally curator of decorative arts. His research focused on the history of nature conservation and this book, Nature and the American, originally published by the University of California Press in 1957, was the culmination of this long labor, an early volume on the U.S. environmental movement and aesthetics. The cover photograph of a man in front of Niagara Falls is by Huth's wife, which suggested that figure standing before the cascade is the author. A very near fine paperback, tight and clean.

About Rural Hours

Rural Hours (formerly Wood + River = Books, est. 2019) specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, environmental literature, and contemporary essay, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. We draw our name from the popular-but-then-forgotten book by Susan Fenimore Cooper (published in 1850), generally considered the first work of environmental creative nonfiction by a woman in the U.S. We are interested in challenging and expanding the canon of environmental literature and finding books that tell remarkable stories and illuminate the tradition of writing about place and natural history.
