Very Good. A 19th century photographic print of an unknown semi-permanent camp on the plains, likely located in the United States. Photographer is unknown. Albumen print is mounted and measures 7 ½" x 6" without mount and 12" x 10" with mount. In very good condition. Print has light silvering; mount has light wear to all edges. The mysterious camp seems to be semi-permanent. A few wooden buildings, eight canvas tents, some with chimneys, a well and a long wooden trough are the basis of the camp. Numerous wagons and men occupy the camp. Teams of 3 and 4 horses are either hitched to wagons or are led by men; wagons are not hauling anything and nothing is visible in the wagon beds; one horse and buggy is parked next to a tent. A faint road is visible in the background, traveling over the rolling hills and fading into the distance. No signs or distinguishing natural features occupy the image. Fair. 1834. Third Printing. Softcover. In 1832, settler William Davis built a dam across Indian Creek to power his mill near present-day Earlville and Sheridan, Illinois, which infuriated the local Potawatami as the fish they relied on could no longer swim upstream. Eventually, tensions resulted in the conflict known as the "Indian Creek Massacre," in which many of the Anglo settlers were killed and two young women were kidnapped. They were later released upon negotation with the Ho-Chunk (Winnebago). This conflict was used in justification of the Black Hawk War. Also with the narrative of Philip Brigdon, and mentions of the attack on the Naper settlement. Pamphlet has two full page woodcuts. Inscription on front wrap reads: "The Compliments of the Executive Committee to Prof. S. C. Hall." Blue paper wraps are soiled and there is some water damage throughout, most pages are foxed, binding is discolored and is splitting in one place. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 24 pp .

Variant is published by Henry Polkinhorn in Washington; printed on the wraps is "Second Edition" and "Reprinted from the Official Copy" after the title; title page reads: title [rule] second edition- reprinted from the official copy. Rebound in red buckram with original blue wraps bound in. Boards have light shelfwear; original wraps have heavy chipping and soiling and have been repaired with archival tape in multiple places; text block has moderate foxing. This is one of the contemporary editions published by a commercial publisher, without plates or maps. This is the first English translation of this volume and includes an added chapter and appendix. It is, according to Howes, “the most important source on the Astor adventure.” This refers to the merchant John Jacob Astor who founded the American Fur Company in 1808, and who “Astoria,” Oregon is named for. Soiling on boards and heavily rubbed corners, with a 4" diameter circular London bookseller's label on the front board. Spine cocked, binding tight. Front pastedown is peeling from main board, with two bookplates from previous owners on the front pastedown endpaper. The yellow endpapers have brown and dark green cloth tape reinforcing the hinges. Another older stamp has Ex Libris Louis Bennett Bishop, a well-known ornithological collector, with a shield design, on the first free endpaper. Each is tipped to the page on the left margin and most have ink caption on their versos with the name of each worker pictured, what his job was, and the date. Black leatherette album with string tie has a slightly bowed soft front cover, with "Photographs" blind-embossed. Rubbed and bumped corners. An interesting industrial view of a specialized printing operation. There are lined pages at the end that contain the signed names marked paid for $1.00 of the Nevada City, California chapter. Four volume set, The Naturalist's Library: Ornithology - Birds of Great Britain and Ireland, is in good condition, complete with all full-page hand-colored engravings by William Home Lizars. Volumes have red cloth covered boards with blind-stamped borders with gilt-stamped flourish on the front cover and gilt-stamped spines. Back covers are blind-stamped. All volumes have shelfworn covers that are chipping around the edges, bumped corners, soil markings, faded spines and dusty gilt-topped text blocks. They all have lightly toned pages inside, some small soil markings, some bumped or dogeared pages and very faint signs of foxing. Volumes I-III have cracked hinges. But they are all complete, collectible books for birders.
