Washington: Henry Polkinhorn. Good. 1845. Hardcover. Variant that falls between Wagner-Camp 115: 3 and 115: 4. Variant is published by Henry Polkinhorn in Washington; printed on the wraps is "Second Edition" and "Reprinted from the Official Copy" after the title; title page reads: title [rule] second edition- reprinted from the official copy. Rebound in red buckram with original blue wraps bound in. Boards have light shelfwear; original wraps have heavy chipping and soiling and have been repaired with archival tape in multiple places; text block has moderate foxing. This is one of the contemporary editions published by a commercial publisher, without plates or maps. Fremont explored the Wind River Mountains and South Pass in Wyoming, employing Kit Carson as a guide. Returning the following year, passing the Great Salt Lake, he followed the Snake and Columbia Rivers to Fort Vancouver. Then travelling southeast to Walker Lake, he crossed back over the Sierra Nevada Range near Lake Tahoe and reached Sutter's Fort. Fremont's accounts and his maps provided the basis for pioneers migrating west on what became the Oregon Trail. Wagner-Camp 115: 3 and 115: 4. Howes F-370. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 278 pp .
