Contemporary MS copy of George II's famous letter to his son, Frederick Louis, Prince of Wales (1707-1751), throwing him out of St. James's Palace over the birth of a granddaughter. 1 1/2 pp., folio, with integral blank, entitled, "The King's Letter." The letter was drafted by John, Lord Hervey (see, Memoirs,
807-808 & altered and amended by Sir Robert Walpole, 1st Earl of Oxford 1676-1745). This copy appears to be in Walpole's hand. "I cannot find any record of any formal horse racing on the isthmus or elsewhere in the Campo arc prior to 1765, but the enormous popularity of the Calpe Hunt which established itself as a major institution in Gibraltar in the very early 19th century will undoubtedly have led to impromptu races from time to time and may have been the catalyst for organizing a more formal approach to racing. Oblong folio, Full green morocco [by Robert Hyde?] (front cover pleasantly faded to brown at edges), elaborate inner gilt dentelles, green moire end papers, a.e.g. N.p., n.d. [Santa Barbara? ca. 1902-1910?]. There is no indication here as to the identity of the binder, the artist, or the date and place of printing, although it resembles the work of Hyde, a member of the Santa Barbara arts and crafts movement. The preliminary illustrations are medieval in nature,a specialty of Hyde's. We know Hyde produced one-of-a-kind volumes including a Guest Book. Nonetheless, all we have is supposition. Whatever its origins, this is a beautiful piece of work, inside and out.
