A scarce little book on the basics of spectrology and the effects of colour on human life. A rare book, with OCLC listing only one copy worldwide, in the Czech National Library.

[9], 400, [36] pp. Illustrated with 130 engraved folding plates. Folio, 395 x 258 mm, bound in modern calf over boards. London: printed for the author by W. Bowyer, 1738. Rare First Edition of this important work on perspective by John Hamilton. His work was of major importance for the mathematical theories of perspective and it even appears that Turner consulted the book around 1809 (Tate Gallery, Diagrams of Harmonic Proportions, after John Hamilton). OCLC lists only the Yale copy in the US. Scattered insignificant marginal worming. From the library of Blackheath Proprietary School, with occasional unobtrusive stamps.

London: Daldy, Isbister & Co., 1876. A rare edition of this classic, much reprinted, Victorian guide to Rome in a deluxe version containing original photographs of buildings and art treasures. Hare's guidebook is "regarded by many as responsible for forming the contemporary view of Rome in the English-speaking world" (See: Nilsen, Nineteenth-Century Photographs and Architecture, 2017). Small cracks to the front hinge of each volume. OCLC lists only Harvard and BL for this edition.

1873. HASHIZUME, Kanichi. Sekai Shobai Orai. 26 leaves, illustrated throughout with small woodcuts in text. 8vo, 180 x 118 mm., bound in Japanese style original blue wrappers in a new blue cloth folding box. Tokyo: Seizando, 1873. A handy bilingual vocabulary of world trade giving the English, with Japanese explanations, of a wide range of terms, place names, goods, and so on. Hashizume, who specialized in handbooks on trade and on foreign languages, produced several of these guides for merchants with similar titles.

1928. HATSUSABURO, Yoshida. Chugai Sangyo Hakurankai. Colour illustrated card cover 190 x 120 mm with a 750 mm long folding colour birds-eye view by Hatsusubaro on one side and text and photo illustrations on the other. Cover also by Hatsusubaro. Kyoto(?): 1928 [Showa 3]. An attractive panorama of, and brief guide, to the Chugai Industrial Expo held in Beppu in 1928. The panorama by Hatsusaburo Yoshida is one of some 3000 maps and views of Japan which he created, some with the help of a team of assistants. The panorama is laid into stunning art deco wrappers. In fine condition, and not surprisingly, apparently unrecorded.

1928. HEARTFIELD, John. Ein Sechstell der Erde unser! 48 pp. Profusely illustrated with photographs and photomontage. Folio, bound in publisher's illustrated wrappers designed by John Heartfield. Berlin: Verlag Die Einheit, 1928. A typical example of printed Soviet propaganda between the wars, full of pictures of a happy and prosperous Russia. A very scarce, apparently unrecorded work by Heartfield. A tiny piece missing from one corner, otherwise fine. Not in Siepmann.

1834. HEATH, William. W.M. Heath's Sketches of, in & about Dover. Illustrated title and 6 plates attached to form a panorama, in contemporary hand-colouring. 4to, 200 x 270 mm. folded, publisher's cloth, in a new burgundy cloth box with a navy label. Dover: The Rigden, 1834. A rare panorama showing Dover from the sea, extending from Shakespeare's Cliff to South Foreland. Slight wear to the spine, but overall a fine copy, with OCLC listing only Yale and University of Sydney worldwide, and the last copy at auction in 1954. Abbey, Life in England 533.

1898. HEIM, Josef. American Commercial Specimens, Second Series. 24 ff., printed on one side only of which 17 are all or partly in colour. Folio, 320 x 240 mm., publisher's illustrated cloth-backed boards, Vienna: Josef Heim, 1898. A stunning and somewhat mysterious piece of Americana. The album was published in Vienna, but the plates were printed in Milwaukee by the Gugler Litho. Co. The work consists almost completely of reproductions of calling cards of American businesses. The only listing on OCLC is of a copy with the same pagination in St. Gallen, but with no mention of second series.

1935. HERRICK, Robert. The Poems of Robert Herrick. Two volumes. [8], 242; [8], 243-486 pp. 8vo., bound in recent three-quarter blue morocco over blue cloth, pages untrimmed. London: Humphrey Milford, 1935. Limited Edition of 500 copies. Herrick's only published collection of poetry, Hesperides and Noble Numbers, includes one of Herrick's earliest datable poems, A Country Life: To his Brother M. Tho: Herrick, written in 1610 as a farewell to his brother. Also present in these volumes are To the Virgins, To Make Much of Time, one of the most popular songs of the 17th century, and Herrick's many love verses to his imaginary mistresses. Fine copy. 1892. HIKIFUDA. Sho kuni-shi-rui seiyo komamono. Colour wood engraving. 260 x380 mm. [Osaka?: 1892-4 (Meiji 25 - 27)]. A splendid example of a hikifuda, handbill or poster, advertising western haberdashery, set in the middle of a railway map of eastern Japan and a timetable for 1894. This is an all purpose hikifuda, printed with a blank space for any business to print or write in their own details. This was printed in July 1892 according to colophon so the timetable would have been added later. In this particular case the buyer added their business details and then, blacked out the business name, redoing it in gold by hand. Interestingly enough it is a wood engraving and not a traditional Japanese woodcut. In an excellent state of preservation.

1927. HILBERSHEIMER, Ludwig. Groszstadt Architektur. 108 pp., illustrated with 229 illustrations. 8vo, recent cloth with the original wrappers bound in. Stuttgart: J. Hoffmann, 1927. A landmark work by Hilbersheimer, a German Bauhaus architect famed for his work in urban planning. Forced to emigrate to the United States, he later became head of urban planning at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, where he worked on several projects with Mies van der Rohe. Wear to wrappers and spine. PROVENANCE: Stamo Papadaki, with his stamp on the front free endpaper.

1934. HISATOMI, Jun and Gyokujo YOSHIDA. Shinkomon Gappon. 27 leaves, including 50 colour woodblock plates, on double leaves folded accordion style (orihon). Folio, 325 x 220 mm., bound in publisher's decorated paper silk over boards in a new chitsu case. Kyoto: Happodo, 1934. A typical collection of Japanese design plates, with each of the 50 plates having multiple images. Slight wear to the boards, but the plates are immaculate.

1828. HOSEMANN, Theodor. Das allergrösste Bilder-ABC. Title-page and 21 leaves with I, J; U, V and X, Y, Z combined on 3 leaves, with contemporary hand-colouring. Oblong folio, 350 x 415 mm., in a new cloth box. Berlin: Winckelmann, 1828. First and only edition of this stunning Biedermeier alphabet. The illustrations in this work are the first by the well-known nineteenth century German artist Theodor Hosemann. The only listing for a complete copy on OCLC is for an uncoloured copy at the University of Braunschweig. Other listings are for individual leaves.

1937. HOSHINO, Tatsuo. (Editor). Shina Jihen Shashin Zenshu [China Incident Photograph Album]. 6 volumes, illustrated throughout with photographs and photomontage. Small folio, 330 x 255 mm., bound in publisher's decorated cloth in original decorated cardboard slipcases. Tokyo: Asahi Shinbunsha, 1937-1940. A rare complete set of these important and extensive propaganda books published by the newspaper Asahi Shimbun recording Japanese actions in the second Sino-Japanese war. The books were beautifully designed and laid out by Kawabata Ryushi, with photographs by Masao Kageyama, Gen Otsuka, Ken Hashida, Masa Tabata and Mutsuo Ueda. The set is comprised as follows: Volume 1: North China; Volume 2: Shanghai; Volume 3: Battle along Yellow River and Xuzhou; Volume 4: Wuhan and Guangzhou operation; Volume 5: Hainan, Nanchang operation; Volume 6: The Great Eagle Unit (fighter aircraft). 1895. HOWARD, Alexander. Howard's Guide to Jerusalem and vicinity. With map of Palestine. 140 pp., illustrated with folding map. 8vo, 175 x 115 mm., bound in publisher's red cloth, recased with new end papers. Jaffa and Jerusalem: Howard's Hotel, [1895]. Chevalier Alexander Howard, otherwise known as Iskander Awad, was a local proprietor of two hotels in Jaffa and Jerusalem. He became famous for successfully suing the Baedeker company in the High Court in London for making disparaging remarks about his hotel in Jaffa. Baedekers were ordered to remove the remarks in a judgement which is reprinted at the back of the guide. They not only removed the remarks in the next edition, they in fact deleted all references to both his hotels in their guides. This in the end greatly affected Howard's business and he suffered financial hardship. A fine copy of this fin-de-siècle study of female nudes, elegantly posed and artfully airbrushed. The title-page lists the photographer as W. Huemmer-Muenchen. However on OCLC he is listed as Waldemar Huemmer. Either way, we can find no information on him. Very rare with OCLC listing only 3 copies worldwide, in Staatsbibliothek Berlin, Rijksmuseum and NYPL.
