Presentation inscriptions from the author to Tom and Felicity to title-pages. Two privately-printed poetry pamphlets produced for family and friends of the poet. The first is recorded in Library Hub and Worldcat only at Oxford, while the second is unrecorded in all catalogues we have consulted.

Rubbed, some wear to extremities, one gathering bound slightly proud. A scarce pocket phrasebook, with a London imprint but printed in Edinburgh by Duncan Stevenson. No copies of a first edition are recorded anywhere, the second edition is NLS only, per Library Hub and Worldcat, and Library Hub records this third edition in the BL only, with Worldcat adding The Historic Houses Trust of New South Wales, Australia.

Later half calf, brown textured cloth boards, spine divided by raised bands and lettered direct in gilt, marbled edges. A little spotting, small wormtrail to engraved title-page, front flyleaf pasted down. Rubbed, boards a little marked, front hinge starting. Armorial gilt stamp of the Balfour family to foot of spine. An early probability work by mathematician and logician Augustus de Morgan (1806-1871), issued as part of Dionysius Lardner’s ‘Cabinet Cyclopaedia’ series of educational works.

Paris: The Traveller’s Companion Series published by The Olympia Press, 1962. 3 vols., 8vo, pp. 191, [1]; 203, [3]; 223, [1]. Original wrappers printed in green and black. A little soiling to textblock edges. A touch of rubbing to extremities, spines slightly creased, nick to fore-edge of front wrapper of vol. 3. de Sade’s novel, a notoriously sexually-explicit satire of French society through an exhaustive and detailed catalogue of the depravity of a nobleman, a bishop, a judge and a banker, was composed in 1785 but the manuscript was lost following the 1789 storming of the Bastille and was not printed until 1905. This translation - the first into English - was done by a pseudonymous Austryn Wainhouse and first published in 1954; this is its third edition and second in the Traveller’s Companion series. Wainhouse had translated de Sade’s Justine and would later translate Pauline Reage’s Story of O, both for Maurice Girodias.

One of 500 copies printed, though very few survive: ESTC locates only the Bodleian copy in the UK, plus 4 in the USA (to which OCLC adds two more). The presumed author, James Delacour (1709-1781; also known as Dalacourt and De-La-Cour), apparently became deranged in the latter half of his life, claiming to be a prophet - bolstered by a lucky guess on the outcome of the siege of Havana in 1762. A little spotting and soiling, margins lightly toned. Spine slightly sunned. Shaved ownership inscription of G. Young to top of title-page, ownership inscription of Alfred Dismorr to flyleaf dated 28/3/71. Three works by diplomat, poet and bishop Giovanni della Casa (1503-1556), produced by the Florentine Giunti family printing firm. The works were issued together but the second two retain title-pages, one dated 1561 in error and the other 1571.

Late 18th-century straight-grained black morocco, boards bordered with gilt rules and a blind roll, spine divided by raised bands between gilt rules, second compartment gilt-lettered direct and the rest infilled with blind tooling, marbled endpapers. A little minor spotting. Binding rubbed, a little insect damage to head of front joint. Later ownership inscription to initial blank: ‘Agnes Payne from Revd. L. Jones’ The major published poems of Benedetto Dell’Uva (1540-1582), a Benedictine monk, in their first collection edition: each been first published individually in 1582 shortly before the author’s death. Contemporary sheep, boards with a blind roll at joints, unlettered spine divided by raised bands, edges sprinkled red. A little rubbed, spine ends worn, front joint cracking at head. Ownership inscription of Granville Hastings Wheler to flyleaf. A later Eton schoolbook edition of selected orations of Demosthenes, in the edition by the Irish judge and scholar Richard Mounteney (1707-1768). Mounteney was a fellow of King's College Cambridge and his text was first published in that city in 1731, though he was also a graduate of Eton and it was adopted in the curriculum there by 1748, when the second edition appeared; a member of the Eton-based Pote bookselling family appears in the imprint of every subsequent edition. A full-colour promotional booklet designed for Guinness by advertising agency S. H. Benson to extoll the virtues of their stout; this one (they were issued yearly) parodying the popular Victorian comic operas of Gilbert and Sullivan.

Benson to extoll the virtues of their stout; this one (they were issued yearly) taking the form of a guidebook to the fictitious ‘Bedsyde Manor,’ with a ticket for this attraction loosely inserted. The punning subtitle plays upon the brewery’s long-running slogan ‘Guinness is good for you.’ The text is by Stanley Penn, the illustrations, John Vernon Lord.

The illustrations are by John Tribe.

Small hole to one leaf, touching two words with no loss of sense. Extremities slightly worn, joints partially cracked. Ownership inscription of W.E. Pollard to front pastedown. A scarce reprint of Philip Doddridge’s (1702-1751) biography of Colonel James Gardiner (1688-1745) after his death in the Battle of Prestonpans while fighting in the Jacobite uprising.

Ownership inscription of J. G. Frome Wilkinson to flyleaf dated March 1921. The first appearance of Constance Garnett’s translation of Dostoevsky’s 1859 novel, the 12th and final volume in Heinemann’s ‘Novels of Fyodor Dostoevsky’ series. The other story alluded to in the title is 1849’s Nyetochka Nyezvanov, an unfinished novel which still accounts for some 150 pages. This is the latter work’s first appearance in English.

The ‘Other Stories’ of the title are ‘Uncle’s Dream’, ‘A Novel in Nine Letters’, ‘An Unpleasant Predicament’, ‘Another Man’s Wife’, ‘The Heavenly Christmas Tree’, ‘The Peasant Marey’, ‘The Crocodile’, ’Bobok’ and ‘The Dream of A Ridiculous Man’. Of the 10 stories collected here, 7 are appearing for the first time in English.
