London: Printed for W. Johnston, 1771. 4to, pp. [viii], xxii, [ii], 219, [5], xxiv, 168, [4], 198 + frontispiece and folding map. Contemporary sprinkled calf, boards bordered with a gilt roll, spine divided by raised bands, red morocco label, other compartments with central decorative tools of urn-shapes surmounted by birds and elaborate corner swags all gilt. Occasional spotting and foxing. Extremities rubbed and a touch worn, joints cracked, frontispiece pulling loose. Armorial bookplate of Thomas Gaisford, red morocco label to front board lettered ‘Honoris causa’. Initially published in several octavo volumes over the course of the 1760s, this is the first collected edition of the Attic orators Demosthenes and Aeschines as translated by the Irish clergyman Thomas Leland (1722-1785), in its second issue with the title-page reset and dated 1771 (some copies are dated 1770, the same year Leland’s version of ‘On the Crown’ appeared). The slightly amateurish label on the front board suggests it was given as a prize - possibly to Thomas Gaisford (1779-1855), whose bookplate as Dean of Christ Church is on the front pastedown.
