New York: Porous Plaster Co. Wraps. Good. Porous Plaster Co., presumed publisher. New York: ca 1895. Pamphlet. 20 pp. Color illustrations throughout. A promotional booklet touting Brandreth's Pills, Allcock's Porous Plasters and Salva-cea as medicinals good for treating a host of ailments. Created by Benjamin Brandreth, who used mass marketing to successfully promote what was, even by the 1850s, considered to be quackery. The booklet offers a variety of brainteasers and in two instances uses racist caricatures/anecdotes of Africans. Solutions to the puzzles were to be sent for. GOOD condition. Minor toning and wrinkling. Some creasing to the corners.

A discussion of sensation recovery in the skin, and experiments conducted on human participants, also discussing the previous experiments by H. Head, W.H.R. Rivers and J. Sherren. GOOD+ condition. Wrappers browned along the extremities. Some curling along the edges. Some browning to the paper.

Cincinnati: Wrightson and Co., Printers, 1870. Wraps. Good. Printed wraps. Pagination runs 51-108, plus ads in the rear. A single issue of this journal devoted to dentistry and practice of medicine. This issue contains chemical essays, os-artificial vindicated, discussions of the proceedings of various societies and short passages discussing the use of aluminum and new metals, the spectroscope, agents for the removals of stains, a recipe for a paste, the benefits of sleep, a piece recalling an anecdote of a girl's thumb tip being successfully reattached after it had been accidently cut off, etc. Jonathan Taft, one of the editors of this journal, is considered to have been one of the 'greatest figures in the development of the dental profession' (see US National Library of Medicine). A lecture on hypnotism (or animal magnetism) and its use in medicine as a cure, focusing on psychological effects, with some consideration of the work in hypnotism and hypnotherapy of Scottish surgeon James Braid (see online bibliography by Adam Crabtree, "Animal Magnetism, Early Hypnotism, and Psychical Research, 1766 - 1925. An Annotated Bibliography #1035). Christian Baumler was a German surgeon and professor, lecturing at the university in Freiburg. GOOD condition. Moderate soiling, some darkening and staining to the covers. Moderate chipping and tearing along the extremities. Small, faint note in pencil to the front cover. Minor scattered foxing in the interior. Many pages unopened along the top edge.

A medical work providing a detailed, technical look at diagnosing a variety of malignant tumors of the abdominal region. GOOD+ condition. Minor soiling, fading and scuffing. Light edgewear. Minor toning in the interior.

New York: Frank Seaman, Publisher, 1883. Wraps. Good. Printed wraps. With a few illustrations. Lengthy section of ads in the rear. A general interest magazine edited by Dio Lewis, with some items related to women's issues and health. This issue includes a study of inebriety in women; a new remedy for polygamy, examining the Mormon practice and its effects on women; exercises using rings (illustrated); a hygienic section with a variety of articles, etc. Diocletian Lewis was a leader in the temperance movement, as well as an advocate for homeopathy and inventor of the beanbag. He strongly supported exercise for women, and led movements in Ohio against saloons, organizing women into prayer groups (see Wikipedia). GOOD condition. Moderate darkening, soiling and some staining to the wrappers. Corners chipped and creased, with some loss to the corners of a few pages at the rear. Wrappers worn along the spine, with a few minor tears.

Philadelphia: Philadelphia Medical Journal, Publisher, 1898. Wraps. Good. Printed wraps. 27 pp. A work originally given as an address, reflecting on advances in medicine from the 17th century on, discussing the role of science, observation and experimentation in the practice of medicine. John Herr Musser, according to the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, was considered one of the best diagnosticians of his day, and served on the faculty of the abovementioned school. Faint "Compliments of J.H. Musser," at the top of the front cover. GOOD condition. Slightly ex-library, with a stamp on the front cover. Heavy offsetting/darkening to the covers, with minor soiling. Several chips along the extremities of the wrappers. Minor toning to the text block.

A detailed guide to the diagnosis and treatment of various injuries and afflictions of the human body, mainly those that may require surgical intervention for treatment. With some mention of the method of antiseptic treatment developed by Lister. Written by Theodor Billroth, an Austrian surgeon regarded as a founder of modern abdominal surgery. GOOD condition. Uneven fading, minor scatteed white (paint?) specks to the spine and a small area of discoloration to the lower front cover. Minor fraying along the hinges and extremities. Owner's signature present. Some toning to the text block.

A work intended to explain physical and psychological changes in girls and young women, relying on many dated stereotypes of women and men, wrong information and outdated social concepts. This includes sections on social ethics, expectations in marriage, as well as sections on personal health and hygiene for women. GOOD condition. Moderate fading, some soiling, minor discoloration and staining to the covers. Spine faded. Light bumping and fraying along the extremities. Text block toned with minor foxing to the endpapers.

No Place: No Publisher. Unbound. Fair. Handwritten letter detailing the medical procedures undertaken to heal an 'ununited fracture of the humerus.' No author, date or location, although dates in the text indicate the treatment took place around 1851-1852, perhaps in Massachusetts. Single sheet, folded into four pages, all full of writing. The author documents his encounter with a 28 year old male who had broken his humerus in a carriage fall. It had not healed correctly, despite attempts by other doctors. The doctor/author of this letter recalls his efforts to reset the bones, including removing callouses and other treatments that eventually led to an apparent somewhat successful outcome. FAIR/GOOD condition. A one by two inch area of loss present at the upper left corner, resulting in small amounts of MISSING text in that location on the first two pages. Single issue of this journal with the usual news, political commentary, etc. Present are two pages devoted to the work of Doctor Horace Green, who specialized in treating throat and lung diseases. The article has large illustrations of his instruments and a procedure, as well as illustrations of the lungs and throat, and provides an account of treatments used by Doctor Green in his own words. Doctor Green is considered a pioneer in the field of treating the lungs and throat. At the time of this publication his work caused some controversy, mostly which appears to have been professional jealousy. Warner and Co., including Dr. Herrick's pills and plasters, Renne's pain-killing magic oil, and others. Includes testimonials, suggestions for use, along with the usual monthly almanac information. GOOD+ condition. Small hole in the upper left corner. General toning. Minor scattered foxing in the interior.

A study of an outbreak of Cholera in Baltimore in 1849, traced to a sewer pipe at the almshouse. With short sections on other diseases found in the region. POOR condition, ex-library. Call number pastedown on the front cover, with interior pastedowns and markings in the interior. VERY HEAVY chipping and loss to the covers, with old unsightly tape repairs to the front cover and spine. Some soiling and darkening. Interior very weakly bound, with pages extremely brittle and on the verge of detaching. Heavy chipping to the paper along the extremities. Extensive underlining in the margins and some notes, to pages 10-13, with a few small marginal lines to several other pages. POOR condition. Sabin 8917.

A guide to raising girls, written for both young women and mothers. the book covers eating, health, behavior, etc., as well as marriage and other subjects. The work reinforces gender stereotypes, including suggesting that women be submissive in their roles as wives. Christine Terhune Herrick was an American author who wrote mostly on housekeeping and childcare. GOOD Condition. Dampstaining to the covers along the spine. Minor soiling and edgewear. Two small spots of white paint to the front cover. Interior cracked along the front hinge at the title page. binding a bit shaken. Scattered dampstaining to the text throughout mostly along the extremities.

VERY GOOD condition. A hint of wear to the exterior, with a large gift inscription on the half title, which has transferred through a little to the title page.
