A promotional booklet touting Brandreth's Pills, Allcock's Porous Plasters and Salva-cea as medicinals good for treating a host of ailments. Created by Benjamin Brandreth, who used mass marketing to successfully promote what was, even by the 1850s, considered to be quackery. The booklet offers a variety of brainteasers and in two instances uses racist caricatures/anecdotes of Africans. Solutions to the puzzles were to be sent for. GOOD condition. Minor toning and wrinkling. Some creasing to the corners.

A general interest magazine edited by Dio Lewis, with some items related to women's issues and health. This issue includes a study of inebriety in women; a new remedy for polygamy, examining the Mormon practice and its effects on women; exercises using rings (illustrated); a hygienic section with a variety of articles, etc. Diocletian Lewis was a leader in the temperance movement, as well as an advocate for homeopathy and inventor of the beanbag. He strongly supported exercise for women, and led movements in Ohio against saloons, organizing women into prayer groups (see Wikipedia). GOOD condition. Moderate darkening, soiling and some staining to the wrappers. Corners chipped and creased, with some loss to the corners of a few pages at the rear. Wrappers worn along the spine, with a few minor tears.

No Place: No Publisher. Unbound. Fair. Handwritten letter detailing the medical procedures undertaken to heal an 'ununited fracture of the humerus.' No author, date or location, although dates in the text indicate the treatment took place around 1851-1852, perhaps in Massachusetts. Single sheet, folded into four pages, all full of writing. The author documents his encounter with a 28 year old male who had broken his humerus in a carriage fall. It had not healed correctly, despite attempts by other doctors. The doctor/author of this letter recalls his efforts to reset the bones, including removing callouses and other treatments that eventually led to an apparent somewhat successful outcome. FAIR/GOOD condition. A one by two inch area of loss present at the upper left corner, resulting in small amounts of MISSING text in that location on the first two pages.
