Printed by H. Woodfall for W. Innys and J. Richardson et al, 1755. 4to (10½ x 8¼ ins). Rebound in later half morocco on moire cloth, spine gilt ruled in six compartments and red spirnkled edges with replaced endpapers (tear on upper board and small nicks at edges - otherwise VG). Pp. xii thereafter unpaginated, title printed in red and black, text in triple columns (some toning on prelims; no inscriptions).

Thick 4to, unpaginated, with the armorial bookplate of Robert Chambre Vaughan cont. calf, red morocco label on spine, five raised bands, hinges slightly cracked, a very nice copy. Originally published in Leipzig in 1722. The text in three parts: Greek vocabulary, in alphabetical order, with Latin translation; a vocabulary of difficult words, with grammatical resolutions; and a vocabulary of Latin words and phrases, with Greek translations.

Complete with half-title, title in red and black, text printed in triple columns. Contemporary sprinkled calf, spine densely gilt in compartments between raised bands, morocco label, gilt. Extremities rubbed, small piece chipped from head of spine, short split to lower portion of front joint, but a clean copy internally in a still sound and attractive binding. The First Edition of Hederich's Greek lexicon edited by Samuel Patrick and printed in England. Hederich's valuable lexicon was originally published at Leipzig in 1722, and was widely used as a textbook and reissued by a succession of editors well into the 19th century.

Text in three columns. Hederich (1675-1748) was a German lexicographer and hellenist who lexicon was first published in 1722. Morrell (1703-1784) was a classical scholar and librettist. He wrote the librettos for Handel's Alexander Balus, Theodora, and Jephtha, but he "never prospered materially -according to William Cole, because he kept low company, especially with musicians, and was irremediably improvident.... In his lifetime [he] was chiefly known, and widely esteemed, as a classical scholar." (ODNB) ESTC T140706.

A popular work that went through as many as 15 editions by the 1830s. Lowndes, p. 1031: "Much esteemed and highly useful." Vancil, p. 109; see also Zaunmüller, p. 169 for additional editions.

First published in Leipsig 1722, this is apparently the first edition printed in England, the first quarto edition, and the first edition to come under outside editorship, 4to, [6] & unpaginated lexicon in triple column, leaf of adverts at the back; title-p. printed in red and black; recent quarter brown morocco, gilt-lettered direct on spine; some limpness to prelims, else a very good copy. A seminal work in Greek lexicography, later enlarged and adapted by a number of editors until the mid-19th century. Ebert II, 712; Graesse III, 228.
