1832 1st ed Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen Feminism Romanticism Bentley

"The more I know of the world, the more I am convinced that I shall never see a man whom I can really love. I require so much!"

― Jane Austen, Sense and Sensibility

'Sense and Sensibility' is a famous novel by English author Jane Austen. This work deals with life and loss and the strength found from within and close friends. Austen was notable for her works of romanticism and feminism, and 'Sense' is no exception, providing critical lessons on moral conduct.

In 1832, Richard Bentley bought the rights to all of Jane Austen's novels and published them for the first time since 1818. This first Bentley edition included Ferdinand Pickering illustrations which helped revitalize an interest in Austen. Despite the date on the title page, this book was published in December 1832.

Description:
1672 Court Songs & Poems 1ed Poetaster Robert Veel English Charles VIII France

Robert Veel was a 17th-century English poet, who, according to most poet scholars, was a poetaster or…inferior poet. While living a rather less-than upright lifestyle, Veel was eager to fund his habits and life of folly, Veel wrote poetic verses in hopes to amuse others. He died at only 28 years old, but before he passed, Veel published, in 1672, a collection of long songs, poetic verses, and drinking shanties called "New Court Songs and Poems". One is particularly curious – a love song from Charles VIII of France!

Description:
1519 LAW Corpus Juris Civilis Justinian CODEX Byzantine P. Incunable HUGE FOLIO

"Freedom is the natural ability of everyone to do what he likes, unless it is prohibited by law or by force."
― Justinian I

Justinian's 'Corpus Juris Civilis' is unquestionably the fundamental work on law and jurisprudence! Parts of this work were originally intended to be used by law students, but they were not solely used as a textbook – they actually carried legal weight …as law! It includes four distinct parts – Codex, Digest, Institutes, and Novellae – each written with a different purpose.

'Codex' was the Justinian's attempt at organizing the laws in a systematic manner. Recognizing that the law system needed to be fixed, 'Codex' covers ecclesiastical law, criminal and civil law, the way laws were written and put into effect, duties of government officials, and proper administrative regulations.

This extremely rare and valuable 1519 edition is a massive folio published in Lyon by Francois Fradin.

Description:
1885 Mark Twain TRUE 1st printing Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Tom Sawyer

"the most praised and most condemned 19th-century American work of fiction" - Legacies of Genius.

"All modern literature comes from one book by Mark Twain. It's the best book we've had. All American writing comes from that. There was nothing before. There has been nothing since." – Ernest Hemingway

Mark Twain's momentous book Huckleberry Finn has been the source of arguments, discussion, and controversy since it first appeared in 1885. It has been reprinted countless times and is still considered to be one of the most popular American novels, if not the most popular.

This first American edition meets the universally agreed upon edition points including:
· The heading for Chapter VI (6) on the first contents page (p.9) reads "Huck Decided to Leave." In later editions, this was changed to "Huck Decides to Leave."
· On page 13, the Illustrations list, "Him and another Man" is incorrectly listed at page… Read More

1799 Romance of the Rose Lorris Medieval de Meun Flamel Alchemy STUNNING 5v

"The more a man gazes on what he loves, the more he sets fire to his heart and bastes it with bacon fat."
― Guillaume de Lorris, The Romance of the Rose
The 'Roman de la Rose' is a famous 13th-century Medieval French poem written as an allegorical dream sequence. It was written by Guillaume de Lorris who sought to express the feelings of romantic love, sexuality, and chivalry. It was completed by Jean de Meung who continued the work begun by Lorris. Thought to be the most widely read book other than the Bible in the 13th- and 14th-centuries, it was highly influential on other authors, notably including Geoffrey Chaucer.

This absolutely stunning
18th-century edition was published in Paris printed in five beautiful vellum-bound volumes. This particular edition is of note, not just for containing the 'Roman de la Rose', but also a preface by Clement Marot, Meung's 'Life of Jean Clopinel', a short treatise on the alchemy of… Read More

1824 ARCTIC Voyage 1ed William Parry North Pole Eskimos Polar Exploration MAPS

An exceedingly rare and valuable 1824 edition of William Parry's personal account from his second voyage to the Northwest Passage. He was one of the first explorers to reach the North Pole, setting the record for the furthest north any human had reached! Parry recounts his interactions with Eskimos, navigations through fog and ice, viewing meteorological phenomena including the Aurora Borealis, and discovering new birds and plants.

The Arctic Bibliography says of this work:
"Abstracts from the author's journals of his three voyages to the Canadian arctic waters; of his attempt to reach the North Pole and his account of the Eskimos."

This work includes 38 impressive, engraved maps and illustrations after the sketches of Captain Lyon, many of which illustrated the domestic lives of Eskimos. It also includes a vocabulary of the Eskimo language. Note what these references say of this work.

Field: "a splendid work!"

Description:
v+321 pages. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's black cloth with gilt lettering to cover and spine. First British edition. St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. He alternated dictating St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston but gradually lost interest in the former. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, shelf wear, hinges and spine heal moderately rubbed, previous owner's name on front end paper else a very good copy.
