Description:
Abraham Small, Philadelphia, 1824. First Edition. Hardcover (Full Leather). Very Good Condition. Book Sabin 44787; Howes M316. First edition, but without rear advertisement leaf. Written by the fourth and arguably most important Supreme Court chief justice. Originally published as Marshall's Introduction to his Life of George Washington, now issued in its first separate (and corrected) edition. In his Preface Marshall explains the reason for publishing his history of the colonies in a separate volume, in "a form less exceptionable than that which it originally bore" (p. vii): "From the extreme, I may add unpardonable, precipitation with which it was hurried to the press, many errors were overlooked which, on a perusal of the book, were as apparent to the author as to others. He was desirous of correcting these errors, and of making the work more worthy of the public to which it was offered, as well as more satisfactory to himself. For this purpose he . . . has made several alterations in the… Read More

Description:
Charles Gosselin, Paris, 1835. Second Edition. Hardcover (Quarter Leather). Very Good Condition. Book Second edition of the first part of this classic analysis of democracy in America, printed the same year as the small first edition of around 500 copies. The first volume’s topic is the institutions of the United States (Institutions des États-Unis) and the second is the functioning of those institutions (Fonctionnement de ces institutions). In a publication note Tocqueville says that because the first edition sold out so quickly, he was only able “to introduce very slight changes in the second. He had to confine himself to correcting some typographical errors and to removing a small number of material errors” (translated from the French). The second part was not published until April 1840 and was released with the eighth edition of this first part. The map has been hand colored and remains bright. It is in excellent condition, with only a small tear to the left margin where the map has… Read More

Description:
Printed by Bartholomew Green, Boston, 1727. Second Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition. Book 2 leaves (title page and address to Sir William Ashhurst) printed in facsimile on laid paper. 64 p., 24 p. Although the two works are paginated separately, the signatures are continuous (Sewall ends with Sig. S and Willard begins with Sig. T). Willard’s pamphlet is followed by an appendix written by Sewall. Size: 8"-9" - Octavo (8vo). In bringing together his earlier work, Willard’s sermon and an update in his appendix, Sewall marshals the evidence for his position that the Millennium is near and that the discovery and Christianizing of America is a crucial and perhaps final development to that end. Drawing from prophetic passages describing the coming Millennium, Sewall find significance in the discovery of the Americas as the final remaining area to be found. He also sees the New World as a logical place for the New Jerusalem to be established. Drawing upon others, including Manasseh Ben Israel,… Read More

Description:
Printed by Richard Bishop, London, 1649. First Edition. Hardcover (Quarter Leather). Binding Copy. Book John Sadler was an important lawyer and constitutional theorist who, among his many offices, at one point served as Oliver Cromwell’s personal secretary. The fact that The Rights of the Kingdom was published in June of 1649 is significant. Charles I had been tried by Parliament six months earlier and was beheaded at the end of the January. Sadler wrote to defend the power of Parliament to try and execute the King through what Parliamentarian historian Paul Seaward describes as “an extended argument that it had always been within the power of parliaments to choose their kings.” Sadler’s evidence is strongly influenced by his philosemitism (friendly attitudes toward the Jewish people), which informs his understanding of both the past and the future. In his backward look, Sadler traced the English constitution to Hebrew sources… Read More
