Toronto: Ryerson 1942, 1st Canadian Edition. (Hardcover) 396pp. Very good, no dust jacket. Blue cloth with yellow titles. Light wear at the tips of the corners and the top and bottom ends of the spine, a previous owner's inscription on the front endpaper, some stains on a few pages and edges, the untrimmed fore-edges show wear, a few pages have dog-ear creases, and on close inspection one can see that the back inner hinge has been repaired from the inside. In a mylar jacket. (Fiction, Canadian, Juvenile).

FIRST EDITION, solidly bound in green with four-colour illistration to front and gilt to spine. Book probably grades Very Good for age but has a corner bump you see on scan. Top and bottom of spine have the usual wrinkles, but other wise the book has no substantial defects. The frontis still has the full tissue-protection. All 20 plates are presnt and correct with no defects. General mild toning. Overall dull looking

You get both volumes 1 and 2. Both in leather or leather-like binding as new and fresh as the day they were born. Maps diagrams layout of town of Granville, map of Vancouver fire. Privately published in 1932 by Major J.S. Matthews (City Archivist) "Copyright of Provincial Archives of British Columbia). A treasure of a survivor and in perfect gift quality. Some mystery exists over Matthews's work. Each of these volumes has a stereo-signed foreword by Matthews dated March, 1932. (He dies 1970) The foreword of volume 2 reads. "Early Vancouver" Volume Two. Its Reproduction--Five Copies "Early Vancouver, as in 1959.
Research indicates that Volume One was commenced in 1931 and consisted of two books, one in original typescript, which is in the city archives, a carbon copy was presented in 1932 to the Vancouver Public Library. Book is GOOD plus in strict observance of grades without regard for age but this is over a century old and at least VERY GOOD for its age. Brown boards with black titling. Tissue-protected frontis. Title page as on scan. 12 photos on 8 plates, as published, and all fine condition.

An excessively rare book. I can find no trace of a first edition like this is any library in the world although there ebooks and PODs.

Toronto: Mcclelland & Stewart, 1963 This Is A Very Nice Copy Inscribed And Dated Nov 6, 1970 By Pierre Berton. I Believe It To Be From The 1963 Edition. It Has Clean Green Boards With Just A Little Rubbing To The Extremities. There Is A Darker Green Vignette On The Front Board And The Spine Titling Is In Orange And Dark Green. It Is A Mcclelland & Stewart 8Vo Stating Copyright, Canada, 1961 And Is Illustrated By William Winter With147-156 Pages. The Seven Titles By Pierre Berton Listed On The Copyright Page Were All Published By 1961 Or Earlier. All That Remains Of The Dust Jacket Is The Back Panel, Showing Pierre And Janet Berton And Six Children On A Boat. The Sixth, An Infant, I Suspect Is Peggy Ann, Who Was Born In 1963 And Presumably Did Not Exist In 1961, When Og, Describing The Five Eldest Berton Children, Was Written.

HATFIELD BOOKS AND MEMORABILIA, a FIVE STAR SELLER, presents an EXTREMELY RARE Canadian bilingual edition of Longfellow's EVANGELINE in NEAR FINE condition. While penned in English, the story of EVANGELINE is Acadian (Nova Scotia), thus the dual English and French texts are most appropriate. Indeed, the private inscription in this softcover copy indicates it was purchased in 1963 in Nova Scotia. Printed and bound by Hazell Watson and Viney Ltd., Aylesbury and Slough, England, dimensions are 4 3/8" x 7 1/4", 126 pp., with light to moderate tanning on pages, some sunning to cover, but never read, owner inscription on first fep, overall condition = NEAR FINE. The cover is very light green mottled glossy paper w/ photo of statue and church front, particulars in turquoise. The French translation by Lemay has been used in a number of different editions dating back to 1865. Noted appraiser James Beattie, while remarking that no copies of this have been sold for 40 years, has attached a value of $225.00

INSCRIBED, SIGNED and dated 1946 by Carl Rungius on the blank FFEP and SIGNED by Schaldach, the author, on the same page. Copies signed by Rungius are very uncommon. Very good condition with slight fraying spine ends, usual light browning of pages, very tips lower corners rubbed, no previous owner marks or writing on any pages other than the signed inscription and author signature. Original slipcase has 1cm deep loss of cover paper at spine ends, complete cover labels (front and back) that are not chipped, some splitting along one spine edge but connections holding well.
