NY: Harper, 1863. War Dated. HB. G+. Some staining, book was evidently used in the field. It must have been gifted after the War by Richardson to the Canandaigua Library, where a bookplate was added./No Jacket.. [Attribution/Manual] Believe this book's content to be not too dissimilar to other books with like title. Butterfield was credited with introducing "Taps" into service use, which may be a myth as it could have been an earlier Irish pub melody. Butterfield earned the Medal of Honor at Gaines Mill in 1862. Not in Nevins. Attribution to Major Charles A. Richardson of the 126th New York Infantry. He enlisted on 9/10/1862 in Canandaigua, NY as a first lieutenant. He was captured at Harper's Ferry during the Antietam Campaign but immediately paroled. He was wounded at Gettysburg and again at Petersburg on 6/16/1864. The latter wound caused his discharge on 9/3/1864. His unit is one of Fox's Fighting 300.

Nevins I-102"...author gained the rank of major before his capture, he spent the last year of the War in Camp Douglas." Howes 374. Dornbusch II-1015. Nevins I-102. Contains sketches of the 5th, 8th, Carnes Battery, Wright's Brigade, 11th, 17th, 33rd, 7th Kentucky and Rust's Brigade besides being about the 16th Tenn Inf (CSA).

London: Kegan Paul, Trench and Co, 1886. First. HB. Front and rear hinges starting but holding. Minor soiling around edges of boards. Square and tight./No Jacket. A very scarce first, many thinking it is the best on this overwhelming Confederate victory. Nevins I-32: A study of merit. Book was designed for Royal Army officer study without an axe to grind or excuses to make. With required maps. Small red book,

West Point, NY: United States Military Academy, 1914. Second Edition. Hard bound. A student entered a few underlines and a list of battles by page number on the rear endpaper. The book is tight and square./None.. Colonel Fieberger was a professor of engineering at West Point where the book was used as a text by the cadets. This detailed book is the narrative portion of a two volumes set. The second volume (NOT INCLUDED) is a battlefield atlas.

NY: Putnam, 1915. First. HB. Book was passed between three or four libraries, but none really hurt it. Square and tight. hinge repaired. Still better than average./No Jacket.. [UNIT HISTORY-UNION] Nevins I-63. Dornbusch I-NY-548. The 146th was a Fox's Fighting 300. Very minimal Xlib. Members of this regiment earned 1/2 of all the Medals of Honor awarded to 5th Army Corps personnel. A rare distinction!!

Atlanta: Foote & Davis, 1901. First. Hard Bound. The best copy I've seen. They are usually dirty and soiled throughout./None. Contains a brief synopsis of the major battles that the Army of Northern Virginia participated in.Nevins I-33. Dornbusch III-1394. Howes 778. Book has a map in pristine condition.

Hickory, NC: Clay Printing, 1911. First. HB. Red Cloth. It has a library sticker on the front pastedown, no other marks. Overall VG./No Jacket.. Nevins II-223. Catawba County is located in Western North Carolina. This rare book lists over 1500 soldiers from the area and gives a bio of each. Tom Broadfoot reports that it is seldom found in good condition. Not the case with this excellent copy. Not only a valuable Civil War book, but an important genealogical tool.

Richmond, VA: West & Johnston, 1862. Wraps housed in a stiff cardboard binder with a clamshell pocket. Very good, square and tight./None.. CONFEDERATE IMPRINT. Howes 167: "Southern political philosophy explained and defended." Not in Nevins. Parrish & Willingham 5583, Crandall 2784. WRAPPERS. INSCRIBED AND PRESENTED BY THE AUTHOR AND PUBLISHERS, MARCH 20, 1862, TO DR. JAMES BEALE [UNK]. The author recounts slavery from the very beginning in an attempt to justify it in the South. Economic necessity caused by the cotton boom also "made it necessary.

Boston: Houghton-Mifflin, 1912. Both Firsts. Hard Bound. Both VG+. As good as I have seen for both volumes./None.. N.C. Wyeth, both volumes. Cease Firing is a novel set in Georgia. It is a sequel to her other novel, The Long Roll. Bibliographies state the two novels should be read together as a set. The Long Roll is her first novel which is set in the Valley during Jackson's Campaign. In Tall Cotton-102. The NY Times said her two novels were two of the best stories of the War. North American Review once rated the Long Roll as the best novel of the Civil War.

NY: Alfred Knopf, 1991. First. Hard Bound. VG+/VG+. A REVIEW COPY,WITH A CARD INSIDE STATING COMPLIMENTS OF THE AUTHOR. WHAT MAKES THIS BOOK VALUABLE IS THAT IT WAS SHELBY FOOTE'S PERSONAL COPY. HE HAS SIGNED IT ON THE FFEP!!!. The narrative is OK but the real value of the book is the signature of Shelby Foote. He was the noted commentator on Ken Burn's great Civil War series on PBS. Foote also authored the highly readable and entertaining Civil War trilogy which has undergone multiple printings.

Columbus: Ohio State University Press, 1930. First. Hard Bound. Near Fine/Near Fine.. The time has come for an impartial and non-controversial study of prisons North and South during the Civil War. Old hates have cooled..." (Publisher's note.) Arguably the best compilation of prisoner of war information. Extensive bibliography. Each prison is addressed individually. Nevins I-193: Best secondary account of military prisons, exhausting most published sources...especially adequate on exchange controversy and war psychosis. Doubt you can find a better copy!

Springfield, IL: Charles C. Thomas, 1966. First. Hard Bound. VG+/VG+. Not in Nevins.Brooks covers the growth of the medical field from a few incompetent surgeons pre-war to the vast operation when the war concluded. He deals with both diseases and surgical care.

NY: Atheneum, 1964. First. Hard Bound. Faded spine and faded slipcase, rest VG+/No jacket, but slipcase.. de Joinville was a son of the King of France who served briefly on General McClellan's staff. He was accepted as a reasonable artist. The preface of the book is by the Comte de Paris and text by modern historians (one General "Jumping Jim" Gavin of WWII fame}. Oversized book, great drawings which are well represented. Contained in a slipcase.

Urbana, IL: University of Illinois, 1996. First. Hard Cover. VG+/The glare in the photo is a reflection of the Broadart protective sleeve. The jacket is in VG+ condition.. This book had a short life among Civil War book collectors. It could not compete with Tom Broadfoot's price guide. However, it has value. There are approximately 1,100 books reviewed with a short narrative on each. There are books found in Eicher that are not in Broadfoot. Gary Gallagher has written an excellent narrative on Civil War literature that is found in this book. I think Eicher should be used more like a Nevins with book information and not a price guide like Broadfoot.

Jackson, TN: McCowat-Mercer Press, 1959. Later. Hard Cover. VG+/VG+. This is the preferred reprint of the great and collectible Cleburne biography. The author, Buck, was on Cleburne's staff for two years. He stated he often messed with the great general and often shared his blanket. He wrote only what he saw or what was substantiated to him personally. Easy to argue the best biography of Cleburne, the best division commander in anybody's army. Krick. Howes-915. Nevins I-65. Besides the battle with the Monitor, there is information on why and how the Virginia was built.
