1721 1ed Waddington Society for Propagation of Gospel Slaves Indians ColoniesEdward Waddington was an early 18th-century English preacher and bishop of Chichester. Many of Waddington's sermons were published in pamphlets, including a 1720 sermon preached before the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts. This organization was important for sending missionaries to the British Atlantic and Caribbean in hopes of balancing out the Jesuit and Catholic missionaries sent from England.
This 1721 first edition of Waddington's sermon features an extensive list of missionaries sent and members of the SPG and includes such topics as itemizing money sent to various teachers and ministers in the American Colonies, baptizing and instructing Negroes and Indians, and a list of all of the Societies missionaries, catechists and School Masters with their yearly salaries, listing dozens in New England, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and North Carolina.
