1901. TAGUCHI, Bairei. and Toshu MATSUI. Chiyo no nishiki. 2 volumes. Each volume illustrated with 26 colour woodblock plates. Oblong folio, 325 x 230 mm., bound in publisher's wrappers in a new chitsu case. Kyoto: Miyata Toyamado, 1901. An extremely rare and unusual work, in that it comprises a collection of kimono designs for men. Wrappers worn, and there is some wear to the corners, but the woodcuts are in bright, fresh condition. OCLC records only the copy in the National Diet Library.

1911. TAKEDA, Narajiro. Misa. 12 leaves showing 24 plates. Folio, 355 x 245 mm., publisher's decorated fabric binding in cloth chitsu case. Kyoto: Daimaru Gohukuten, 1911. A spectacular album of kimono designs, and also a perfect example of the unrivalled quality of Japanese woodblock printing. OCLC lists only the National Diet Library.

Oblong folio, 260 x 380 mm., bound in publisher's illustrated wrappers in a new blue cloth folding box. Tokyo: Fureberukan, 1932. This is one in a series of "observation" books begun in 1927 by the now named Froebel-kan - based on the principles of educator Friedrich Froebel. An interesting example of prewar Japanese book design for children, with some of the plates verging on kitsch, and some almost surreally avant-garde.

Leningrad: Gos. izd-vo detskoi lit-ry, 1934. A fine copy of this rare and charmingly illustrated children's history of the automobile. OCLC lists only two copies worldwide, of which one is in America.

[4], 194; 29, [1], XIII, [1] pp., illustrated with 30 photographic views in text and two large folding maps of Moscow. 8vo, 153 x 105 mm., bound in publisher's green cloth, title gilt on front cover. Moscow: Imprimerie Th. I. Hagen, 1897. Second revised edition of Tastevin's well known travel guide to Moscow in French, with notes on religion, government, climate, literature, and, mostly, city monuments. There is practical advice offered, including a listing of restaurants, hotels, stores, tramways, etc. Then, as expected, are guides to libraries, churches, theaters, clubs, circuses, universities, etc., followed by a short history of Moscow. The second part of Tastevin's Guide offers more in-depth descriptions of the major sites to be visited and is followed by a vocabulary and conversation manual. Erratum slip on one page (31). A near fine copy.

Keller & Co 1927. First edition, later issue. In the series "Kosmos-Haus-Bücher," with typography (including binding) by Johannes Molzahn of Magdeburg. Taut uses his own family home as a prototype for his ideal affordable family house. "An essential part of Taut's work must be seen in his use of color which he had reintroduced to architecture during his Expressionist period. This provided for a great amount of articulation in the visual environment of standardized living units" (H.H. Waechter, Macmillan Encyclopedia of Architects). London: John Harris, n.d. (ca.1825). Fine copy in original boards. First published in 1821, the work proved popular and was reprinted again in 1822 and 1824. With chapters on, and illustrations of, Columbus, Cortez, Balboa, Pizarro, Patagonia, Brazil, West Indies, North American Indians, Hearne's journey, Hudson's Bay, Canada, and the United States. Dokumental'nyi pamflet By Ilya Feinberg. 92, [20] pp., illustrated throughout with photomontage, and 9 full page plates including 2 foldout plates. 8vo, 250 x 180 mm., publisher's bound in black cloth, front board embossed and printed with metallic red and silver ink, preserved in a new cloth folding box. Moscow: MTP, 1934. This stunning book was published to mark the 20th anniversary of the start of the First World War. A splendid example of Telingater's skill as a book designer, combing photomontages with dramatic layout and strips of red paper with white type, tipped in throughout the book. An elaborately constructed book that is an analysis of the Great War and the international and domestic issues and events that coincided and inspired the Russian Revolution. Intricately designed with two concertina foldouts, one depicting dinosaurs. Front inner hinge repaired, otherwise very good condition.

On the Komsomol]. 7 volumes. 8vo, 190 x 130 mm., each volume bound in publisher's photographically illustrated wrappers, preserved in publisher's red slip case with photograph of Lenin, designed by Telingater, preserved in a new cloth box. Moscow: Molodaia gvardiia, 1932. A classic example of Telingater's genius as a book designer. This particular work was banned and withdrawn from circulation after Pavel Postyshev, the author of part 5 was jailed, as an enemy of the USSR, and subsequently the complete set in its original box is extremely rare, with OCLC listing only NYPL and U. of Chicago in the U.S. The set is made up as follows: 1. Small 4to, 205 x 163 mm., contemporary sheep-backed plain boards, in a recent custom quarter morocco slipcase. Philadelphia: James Thackara & Son Engravers, 1814. An extremely rare early American drawing manual. While somewhat stained and browned throughout, and with the binding in poor shape, it is nonetheless a serviceable copy. There are 4 copies in the auction records, 1972, 1969, 1921 and 1908, all ascribed with a publication date of 1796. The copies on OCLC have been ascribed dates 1798, 1814 and 1816. OCLC lists AAS, Michigan, LC and JCB.

Small folio, 300 x 230 mm., bound in publisher's blue and grey cloth with black lettering and design. San Francisco: The Arion Press, 2003. One of 400 copies, this being one of the 200 with the Wayne Thiebaud lithograph, which bears his signature on the facing page. A minor classic of counter-culture literature, Brautigan's "Novel" reads more like a book of poetry, using surreal prose to tell an American coming of age story. A simple yet effective production by the Arion Press, printed with Bookman type on Mohawk superfine paper. As new. The copies with the Thiebaud lithograph are very scarce.

A disconcerting advertising piece for the fur coat firm of Jungmann, with the plates showing models wearing coats and then the animals whose fur had been used to make the coats. Despite some foxing, an acceptablle copy. OCLC lists only FIT and the BN.

Edo: Owariya Seishichi, 1852-1864. A very special set of these Tokyo maps consisting of a mix of the first and revised editions, but containing an unrecorded 31st part. This part covered the Hacchobori district which was composed of the security administration; police, judge, defense, sheriff, etc. This colourful series of late Edo period maps depicts Tokyo's wards and the buildings, temples, shrines, gardens and residences therein. These maps represent not only a fine example of woodblock printing, but also remain an indispensable source of information on the architecture of Tokagawa Edo. This album showcases toys and educational materials for kindergarten children produced by the Georgian scientific-research institute, and provides a unique insight into Soviet pedagogy. The work is particularly important as it promoted the toys which later became mainstream. The album is divided into four parts: "Educational Toys" (20 ill.), "Construction Toys" (6 ill.), "Folk Toys" (4 ill.) based on the famous Georgian folk tales, and "Outdoor Toys" (5 ill.). Oblong 8vo, 146 x 214 mm., publisher's blind-stamped wrappers. Moscow; Leningrad: Pishchepromizdat, 1936 & 1937. These three surreal homages to the sausage are a modest forerunner to the massive work produced in 1938 by the same publisher. While far smaller, the plates, each with an individual sausage, still have a somewhat surreal quality. While they do not have the avant-garde sensibility of Telingater's ball bearing catalogue or Piet Zwart's wire catalogue, these odes to the sausage can certainly lay claim to a place in surrealist literature. These are rare books and are not listed on OCLC.

A fine copy of one of many monographic issues of this landmark periodical, devoted to Krammachstroi and Ouralmachstroi . As Martin Parr says "from 1930-1940 URSS en Construction employed the best Soviet photo-journalists and graphic designers. Amongst the photographers were Max Alpert, Arkadi Shaikhet, Georgi Zeima, Boris Ignatovich, Semen Fridland and Georgi Shaikhet. Designers included Nikolai Troshin, El Lissitzky, Sophie Kueppers, Aleksandr Rodchenko and Varvara Stepanova.
