Bruce Berlind was an old friend of Merwin's, as they graduated from Princeton within a year of each other and both studied with John Berryman there. Berlind was a longtime English professor at Colgate and ran its visiting writer series. There's a good story about how Merwin and Hayden Carruth dined and drank wine together at Berlind's house while Carruth played hooky from the National Book Award ceremony. All hungover, Berlind and Merwin drove over to Carruth's place the next morning to tell him he had in fact won the award. Decorated cardboard wraps. Rushville, NE: Caroline Sandoz Pifer/Mari Sanoz Corp, 1970. First edition. Softcover. Fine. An association copy, inscribed on the title page by the editor: "To Dr. Wallace Stegner, in deep appreciation from Caroline Sandoz Pifer." Pifer was the younger sister of Mari Sandoz and arranged for the posthumous publication of this piece of historical fiction (which at times reads as essay) about the Plains tribes council in 1875, the year before the Battle of Custer, during which the U.S. tried to purchase the Black Hills from the tribes. Stiff textured brown wraps, staple bound, 28 pages, with a brief introduction by Pifer and Mari Sandoz's sources at rear. A fine copy and a nice association between Western writers.

This is number 33 (numbered by Ann!) of 750 copies. We have seen one other signed copy and it was also signed via a label. The recipient was likely Ann Matteson who is thanked in the acknowledgments; she was a devoted outdoorswoman and denizen of many National Parks, finally Yosemite (one notes her son was named Muir). Sargent was a prolific historian of Yosemite. Her bestselling book was John Muir in Yosemite National Park (1972). A very good plus book with some subtle waviness to the upper corner of the text block and light soiling/staining to upper text block face, otherwise fine in green cloth with gold lettering; in a good only jacket that is heavily dampstained and wrinkled (accounting for that slight waviness). Ryan's first book was privately printed, read self-published, that same year ("It was the act of a desperate woman," she has said, "and it did me not a shred of good"). She would go on to become the U.S. Poet Laureate from 2008-2010 and won the Pulitzer in 2011 for her own new and selected poems, The Best of It. Sarton was a prolific writer and poet, who later in her career became widely recognized by critics as important and influential.
