About This Item

Rushville, NE: Caroline Sandoz Pifer/Mari Sanoz Corp, 1970. First edition. Softcover. Fine. An association copy, inscribed on the title page by the editor: "To Dr. Wallace Stegner, in deep appreciation from Caroline Sandoz Pifer." Pifer was the younger sister of Mari Sandoz and arranged for the posthumous publication of this piece of historical fiction (which at times reads as essay) about the Plains tribes council in 1875, the year before the Battle of Custer, during which the U.S. tried to purchase the Black Hills from the tribes. Stiff textured brown wraps, staple bound, 28 pages, with a brief introduction by Pifer and Mari Sandoz's sources at rear. A fine copy and a nice association between Western writers.

About Rural Hours

Rural Hours (formerly Wood + River = Books, est. 2019) specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, environmental literature, and contemporary essay, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. We draw our name from the popular-but-then-forgotten book by Susan Fenimore Cooper (published in 1850), generally considered the first work of environmental creative nonfiction by a woman in the U.S. We are interested in challenging and expanding the canon of environmental literature and finding books that tell remarkable stories and illuminate the tradition of writing about place and natural history.
