19.25 x 14.5 inches. Unframed. In near fine condition.
The image first appeared in Sendak's award winning book "In the Night Kitchen" (New York: Harper & Row, 1970). It shows three rotund chefs, apparent caricatures of comedian Oliver Hardy, preparing batter for a "morning cake." The protagonist of the story, a boy named Mickey, can be seen sitting on a milk bottle at the upper left. This image was first produced in 1971 as a fine art print included among twenty images chosen by Sendak for his portfolio "Pictures by Maurice Sendak" (New York: Harper & Row, 1971). A wonderful original drawing by Dr. Seuss of his iconic character, "The Lorax". Additionally signed and titled to the right of the drawing by Dr. Seuss. The drawing showcases Dr. Seuss's unique style and attention to detail. Drawn using using coloured felt tip pens, the drawing depicts a blue Lorax with a yellow moustache, standing on a tree stump. Beautifully mounted, glazed, and framed ready for presentation. The overall size is 44*36cm. A true collector's piece presenting in fine condition.
The Lorax was Dr. Seuss's favourite of all his works; an environmental story where the Lorax speaks on behalf of the trees, against the industrial ambitions of the Once-ler. The book was first published in 1971, at the beginnings of the modern environmentalist moment, as a protest by Dr. Seuss against huge levels of logging in his home state of California. Dr. Seuss said of the work:
"The Lorax came out of me being angry. The ecology books I'd read were dull.… In The Lorax I was out to attack what I think are… Read More

First Edition. 8vo, Publisher's boards, untrimmed, re-backed with portion of original title label laid on, housed in cloth portfolio, slipcase with title in gilt to spine, xvi, 144p. Published by Edwards and Knibb (London), 1820.

The boards a little marked and rubbed, a few very light spots internally. A very good copy.

This work provides an account of the land journey in South Africa between the Keiskama and Beka rivers to the capital, Cape town. This work was first published in 1798 under an alternative title, "Narrative Of The Loss Of The Ship Hercules, Commanded By Captain Benjamin Stout", with 1820 being the first time it was re-published under a new title. The two bibliographies for this work (Mendelssohn and Teal) disagree with the work's title.

This copy contains the Bookplate of Colonel Sir Michael R. Shaw-Stewart, to the front pastedown. Sir Michael R. Shaw Stewart (1826-1903) was a Conservative MP from 1855-1865, and a British Baronet, son of Sir Michael Shaw-Stewart, and therefore the… Read More

Bound in quarter goatskin, red calf label lettered in gilt, raised bands with decorative gilt motifs, likely an early 19th century continental binding, title inscribed in ink on lower edge; an indication of how the book was originally shelved. A tape repair to the reverse of the frontispiece, a small tear to the bottom right corner of the frontispiece (not affecting the image or text), some fraying to page edges and a little loss (not affecting any text) to pp. 349-352., some occasional minor browning. A very good copy.

This is Thomas Sydenham's (1624-1689) first book and a landmark work in epidemiology. This work "became a standard textbook of medicine for two centuries so that he became known as 'The English Hippocrates'. Among his many achievements was the discovery of a disease,… Read More
