This collection includes one book each for The Butler, The Chambermaid, The Cook, The Laundress, and The Waitress (the only missing volume is The Child's Nurse). Each book features a colored frontispiece and an introduction by Maurice A. Bigelow, Director of the School of Practical Arts at Columbia University at the time of publication (1917). The books were written both to train and improve the condition of household workers, and they provide a fascinating look at women's work in early twentieth century America. 76-84 pages per book. 6.75" x 4.25". Near fine condition with sound bindings for all volumes (all lack original dust jackets).

Signed presentation copy from English artist William Rothenstein to his daughter in 1920 (the year of the book's publication) with the inscription "for my darling Betty from her beloved dads - Xmas 1920." Limited first edition (2000 copies total) of 24 portrait drawings by Rothenstein of his prominent friends and contemporaries, including Joseph Conrad, Andre Gide, Thomas Hardy, T.E. Lawrence, George Bernard Shaw and H.G Wells. 10" x 6.75". Rothenstein describes the book as "an act of homage to those who give rather than take" and includes biographical sketches written by friends with each portrait. Very good+ condition. Very good dust jacket with some edgewear and chips and vertical tear at spine (see photo). Protected in mylar wrapper. Scarce with dust jacket and artist signature.
