About This Item

New York: Longmans, Green and Co, 1917. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. All first editions, these 5 volumes in the "Simple Directions" series by Caroline Reed Wadhams are rarely found as a set. This collection includes one book each for The Butler, The Chambermaid, The Cook, The Laundress, and The Waitress (the only missing volume is The Child's Nurse). Each book features a colored frontispiece and an introduction by Maurice A. Bigelow, Director of the School of Practical Arts at Columbia University at the time of publication (1917). The books were written both to train and improve the condition of household workers, and they provide a fascinating look at women's work in early twentieth century America. 76-84 pages per book. 6.75" x 4.25". Near fine condition with sound bindings for all volumes (all lack original dust jackets).
