Description:
Oxford: Roman Books, 1979. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Very Good. First edition. Slim paperback. 21 × 15cm, 100pp. This book is the fascinating story of the sundials at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, and the men who designed, built, and cared for them. The tale begins with the enigmatic figure of Nicolaus Kratzer, the Bavarian who became 'horologer' to Henry VIII and created the first sundial for the newly established College in the 1520s, and concludes with the 1976 restoration of the Pelican or Turnbull dial in the College's Front Quad. The author directed this restoration on the basis of his extensive researches in the College archives, and his account of this remarkable 400-year old monument is a triumph of historical detective work. Condition: This copy is in very good condition, with a little light wear to the covers and a slight crease to the spine.

Not only the immense mountain ranges, gigantic craters, bottomless pits and clefts but many strange objects, unknown on the earth, are described in this book in language that everyone can understand." Illustrated throughout. Condition: Whilst to book is in good readable condition, the page edges are foxed. New York: New York Studio School, 2008. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Very Good. First edition. Slim paperback, stapled binding. 20 × 20.5cm, 23pp. This slim book accompanied an exhibition at the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting & Sculpture in 2008. As well as the introductory essay, it carries 15 drawings from Peter de Francia. In Ashton's essay she places de Francia within a humanistic tradition of draftsmen as freedom fighters stretching from Goya to Guttuso, via Beckmann, Picasso and Grosz. There are shades, too, of a distinctly British tradition of caricature, of Hogarth and Rowlandson, in de Francia's pointed social satire. Hardback, bound in black card covered boards. 17.5 × 12.5cm, 192pp. Signed and dated, with hand-drawn CND symbol to the title page. @earth is as revolutionary in form as it is in content. It contains no words: instead it tells its story in the universal language of photomontage, long the favoured medium of radical artists. Peter Kennard is one such, whose work has consistently questioned power structures and injustice, from his anti-nuclear works of the 1980s to his powerful works in response to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. @earth is a photo-essay in seven chapters, combining new works, made together with Tarek Salhany, with iconic images from throughout Kennard's 40-year career. In turn challenging, shocking, unsettling and poignant, @earth makes a powerful statement about the impending eco-crisis, the arms race and the injustices of the power structures dominating today's world. New York: The Museum of Modern Art, 1998. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. First edition. Hardback in dustwrapper. 27.5 × 26cm, 319pp. Of the indisputably great figures in 20th-century architecture, Alvar Aalto is in many ways the most humane, the least rigid, the most relevant to our contemporary sensibility and the emerging future. This sumptuous book offers a thorough study of an innovative and prolific master, whom Frank Lloyd Wright termed a genius. This fresh, penetrating examination of Aalto's work and influence includes essays by five notable critics and historians. Some 50 of Aalto's projects - houses, town halls, cultural institutions, factories, furniture and glass designs, and regional plans - from all periods of his extraordinarily productive career are illustrated and described, using much previously unpublished and newly photographic material. This book was published to accompany a 1998 retrospective exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York.…
