Turner, who was Herrick's student at the University of Cincinnati and helped Herrick found the Journal of Comparative Neurology, wrote Part III ("Freshwatere Ostracoda of the United States" (pages 277-337) as well as "Appendix to Part II Notes on the Cladocera of the Southeastern Part of the United States" (pages 269-276). Turner was the first African American to receive a Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Chicago (1907).
