Description:
[s.l.]: [s.n.], 1878. Small broadside (185 x 250mm), woodcut vignette below title, text in two columns. Poor-quality paper chipped and somewhat toned, a few tears touching title, larger area of loss to one margin clear of text. A scarce and fragile broadside of patriotic doggerel, to inspire Englishmen to ‘arrise [sic] with heart and hand, And sweep the cowardly Russian bear from off the Turkish land.’ With reference to Crimean war battles at ‘Inkerman, Sebastopool and Balaclava too,’ it likely dates from the Russo-Turkish war of 1877-78, when British warships were sent through the Dardanelles to aid the city of Constantinople, although the signing of the Treaty of San Stefano on March 3rd 1878 ended the conflict and obviated the cause for this ‘probable war’. Poorly-printed with numerous compositing errors on thin paper, this is an unlikely survivor and we have not been able to trace any copies in any collections. Although last line… Read More

Description:
London: Published by J. Taylor, at the Architectural Library, 1812. FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. xxvi, [ii], 396, [2, errata] + 39 engraved plates. Contemporary sprinkled calf. Plates toned and spotted, a little soiling elsewhere. Somewhat crudely rebacked, black leather labels, hinges relined, old leather rubbed and scratched with some wear to corners. Armorial bookplate of Robert Warden to front pasetdown along with his gift inscription ‘to his friend John Urquhart’ dated 1824. An explicit imitation of Moxon’s Mechanick Exercises of the 1680s by Peter Nicholson (1765-1844), the prolific Scottish architect and engineer. It was a popular and influential text, especially in the USA where it was reprinted beginning in the 1830s. There are suggestions that the first edition was in 1811 but no evidence of this seems to have survived if it did exist.

A Copenhague [Copenhagen]: Chez Nicolas Möller, 1773. FIRST FRENCH EDITION, 4to, pp. [ii], xliii, [iii], 372 + 25 engraved plates and maps (three with hand-colouring, a number of them folding) and 1 folding letterpress table. Contemporary sprinkled calf, spine gilt in compartments, red morocco label. One plate (XXI) shaved at fore-edge, a touch of minor spotting. Leather worn (especially at joints) and showing insect damage, label mostly defective, cords weakening but boards held. Carsten Niebuhr (1733-1815) was the astronomer, naturalist, and sole survivor of the malaria-stricken Royal Danish expedition to Arabia in the 1760s. This, his first book, was initially published in German the previous year and contains a number of important maps and much significant information, including the first European mention of Wahhabism. The plates include depictions of the mosques at Mecca and Medina.

Description:
London: Harrison, Bookseller to The Queen, 1860. FIRST EDITION, early issue, 8vo, pp. 79, [1]. Original dark brown limp pebbled cloth boards, boards bordered with triple blind rules, front board lettered direct in gilt. Spine rather nibbled, front joint correspondingly weakened, boards somewhat mottled. An early printing of Nightingale’s enormously influential nursing book, first published in 1860 and reprinted frequently over the following decades. This copy has ‘[the right of translation is reserved]’ on the title-page, ads to the endpapers dated 1860, and 5 of the 6 issue points identified by Bishop & Goldie as denoting an earlier printing. The sixth issue point, the corrected heading on p.73, is noted as potentially later, being found in both states in copies with all other corrections made. But in this copy, that ‘later’ correction is accompanied by the other five in the earlier, uncorrected state - perhaps disproving the assumed… Read More
