About This Item

London: Published by J. Taylor, at the Architectural Library, 1812. FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. xxvi, [ii], 396, [2, errata] + 39 engraved plates. Contemporary sprinkled calf. Plates toned and spotted, a little soiling elsewhere. Somewhat crudely rebacked, black leather labels, hinges relined, old leather rubbed and scratched with some wear to corners. Armorial bookplate of Robert Warden to front pasetdown along with his gift inscription ‘to his friend John Urquhart’ dated 1824. An explicit imitation of Moxon’s Mechanick Exercises of the 1680s by Peter Nicholson (1765-1844), the prolific Scottish architect and engineer. It was a popular and influential text, especially in the USA where it was reprinted beginning in the 1830s. There are suggestions that the first edition was in 1811 but no evidence of this seems to have survived if it did exist.
