Rome: Federazione italiana nazionale fascista per la lotta contro la tuberculosi, 1934. A fine copy of a book where the imaginative design is in dramatic contrast to the dreary contents. A rare book, with OCLC listing only one copy in the U.S. at the International Labor Office in Washington D.C.

A massive survey of Italian advertising at the begining of the war, published with text in Italian and German as a special supplement to the periodical La Pubblicità d'Italia. A tour de force of book design and an encyclopedia of fascist aesthetic. Rare with most copies seemingly destroyed in the War.

Folio, 415 x 300 mm, bound in original wrappers. Moscow: Editions d'Etat des Beaux-Arts, 1936. A fine copy of a typical issue of this landmark periodical, this one devoted to collective farms in Kiev. As Martin Parr says "from 1930-1940 URSS en Construction employed the best Soviet photo-journalists and graphic designers. Amongst the photographers were Max Alpert, Arkadi Shaikhet, Georgi Zeima, Boris Ignatovich, Semen Fridland and Georgi Shaikhet. [18] leaves (including title-page), printed on one side only, with 106 lithographs in contemporary colour, heightened with gum arabic. 12mo, 140 x 91 mm., original dark green publisher's illustrated boards, in a modern cloth folding box. Guben: Bei F. Fechner, 1830. Extremely rare children's picture book. Each of the leaves contains six or seven hand-coloured images with captions in German, French, and English. The little pictures represent objects which would be familiar to children: a night candlestick, a kettle, a frying pan, wooden shoes. Small tear at bottom of back wrapper not affecting text or image, light spotting to covers, otherwise in very good condition. OCLC lists Indiana, Princeton, NYPL, UCLA, Harvard, Yale, in the US.

The exquisite jewel-like etchings illustrating the poetry of Ferrand were etched and printed by Haass, who studied with Hayter. Small in scale, the color etched plates show a notable refinement of technique. Edition limited to 75 copies, all printed on Arches. Signed by the artist on the colophon. Shooting festivals originated in Germany and date back to the Middle Ages. This is the trade edition of Calder's illustrations of La Fontaine's Fables embellished with a full page drawing by Calder inscribed by him to Curt Valentin who was his dealer and the publisher of Calder's book, Three Young Rats.

One of an edition of 40 copies.

Los Angeles: The Lapis Press, 1993. The splendid coloured aquatints which Francis produced to illustrate Guyotat's text were among the last things he did before his death, and are characteristic of his work. One of an edition of 45 copies signed by Guyotat and Francis.

Novarra: Officine dell'Istituto Geografico de Agostini, 1936. A stunning example of fascist book design. Published by the Italian Foreign Ministry, this alphabet was presumably issued as propaganda for children of diplomats and foreign service employees to demonstrate Italy's superiority. Slight rubbing to the edges of the boards, but overall a fine copy. A book that is of great rarity with OCLC listing only copies at Princeton and Northwestern.

[2], 21-504 pp., illustrated with ten lithographic plates including one coloured. 8vo, 200 x 120 mm., gilt stamped three-quarter leather over marbled paper. Philadelphia: Edward Young, 1859. Third edition, the "Merchants' Edition." A comprehensive survey of commercial activity in Philadelphia on the eve of the Civil War. The book was written in an attempt to demonstrate the importance of Philadelphia as a commercial and manufacturing center and the tremendous amount of information contained in it attests to its achieving that goal. Despite erratic numbering at the beginning, this copy is complete as published. A fine copy.

A complete set of these monographs on the Soviet economy designed by Jiri Friml and Karel Teige and with some particularly attractive isotypes. In a remarkable state of preservation, with just minor damage to the foot of two spines. Complete sets are extremely rare, with OCLC listing just 12 numbers at Getty and The Wolfsonian.

1906. FURUYA, Korin. Shima shima. 2 volumes. Each volume illustrated with 20 leaves of colour woodblocks. 8vo, 250 x 180 mm., bound in publisher's wrappers in a new chitsu case. Kyoto: Yamada Unsodo, 1906. An early twentieth century pattern book of textile designs with most pages having three designs. The designs are the work of Furuya Korin, a student of Kamisaka Sekka, who is best known for his combining the style of the Japanese Rimpa school with European Art Nouveau. In fine condition. OCLC lists only Harvard and the Metropolitan Museum.
