Random House, 1943. Complete with original typed & signed Roald Dahl letter (loosely laid in) on Dahl's "Gypsy House" notepaper dated 27/9/90 - "Dear Mr, Martin/Thank you for your letter. I will buy your "Gremlins" copy. Here's my cheque/Yours Roald Dahl". True first edition, first printing. 4to. A very good+ copy with clean boards. Some edgewear to extremities. Internally very clean indeed with no inscriptions & importantly with this title - non of the usual splitting to Gremlin illustrated endpapers. The very good dustwrapper has a few short closed tears - a couple with old tape strengthening to rear. Some edgewear to other extremities with nicking at spine corners. Original first issue price of $1.00 to top right of front flap. None of the usual fading to red spine. First edition, first printing, first issue with vol i - 32pp ads dated April 1867 and five errata on 6 lines on pvi and vol ii with single advertisement dated February 1868 to rear and 9 errata on 7 lines on pviii. Complete in two volumes housed in a bespoke quarter green morocco gilt clamshell case with raised bands to spine. A very good+/near fine set. Clean boards with light wear to extremities. Bright gilt. No marks to boards of vol i & a couple of small scuffs & a few small bubbles to cloth on vol ii; Tiny Victorian booksellers label to endpaper "Howell & Day, New Street, Birmingham". Internally complete and clean. Old rubbed out pencil name to rear of endpaper in vol i and a few spots to blank endpapers only. No inscriptions. Golden Cockerel Press, 1943. One of 30 copies bound in full Morocco and signed by Somerset De Chair. A very good+ copy. Wear to extremities with tanning to spine & some offsetting to boards. Internally deckle edge handmade paper leaves - all in very good+ condition with no inscriptions. Map endpapers original and unsplit. A personal account of a tiny force sent to Baghdad from Palestine to deal with the effects of the Golden Square coup and to help the Habbaniya. The operation was a success with Baghdad falling on 30th May 1941 and saved Iraq from falling into the hands of the Nazis.
