About This Item

Macmillan, 1930. First edition, first printing. 8vo. Orange boards with gilt titles. A near fine copy with clean boards - light mottling. Internally clean and complete with attractive bookplate of the renowned collector of Delafield - "From the E. M. Delafield library of Robert Milnes No 20A" to front endpaper. Very clean with wonderful period plates by Arthur Watts. The rare dustwrapper is complete with some edgewear to extremities and mild toning to spine. Original price of 7/6net to front flap. A lovely copy of a Classic title in the very rare dustwrapper. This is the first dustwrapper we seen or handled on this title. Delafield's defining title and a classic of domestic literature - critics on both sides of the Atlantic greeted it with great enthusiam. It initially appeared in weekly instalments in Time and Tide - the feminist weekly. The diary is the (largely autobiographical) chronicle of the disaster prone "day to day" life of a wife and mother living a frugal life in the Devonshire country - "above all it is fun". In 1931 the New York Herald called it "a delicious book - a triumph of art and wit
