Simultaneously published with the Oxford hardcover edition, this paperback (274 pp) is in VG condition with some fading to covers and staining to top pages. INSCRIBED by Aiken to noted woodcut artist, printmaker, designer, and author Clare Leighton: “for Clare con amore from Conrad 1964.” In 1963, both Aiken and Leighton contributed to the edition Poetry in Crystal By Steuben Glass, interpretations in crystal of thirty-one poems by contemporary American poets. Aiken contributed a poem “Harvest Morning” and Leighton contributed an engraving design to accompany another poem. A wonderful association copy between this National Book Award winner and prized artist known for her woodblock engravings.

Algarin.”  Algarin, who was born in Puerto Rico, taught at Rutgers for more than 30 years, but lived most of his life in New York, died in November 2020. He co-founded the Nuyorican Poet’s Café with Pedro Pietri, Miguel Pinero, and others in the early 1970s and is considered a foundational figure in the Nuyorican literary movement, a poet who had a “keen ear for the language of the street and the power of poetry performed live.” Algarin helped popularize the term “Nuyorican” which described “the bilingual, bicultural reboot of Puerto Rican-ness blossoming in the neighborhoods of New York.”  Mongo… Read More

With scarce order form folded, with striking illustration on verso. Inaugural issue of this short-lived “magazine of poetry & polemics”—only four issues (one double) were published (which included the famous Andy Warhol cover).
