Description:
Motif Editions. No binding. Fine. Andy Warhol (producer) [London]: Motif Editions, 1970. Vintage original 30 x 20" (76 x 51 cm.) British poster. Unfolded, fine. Andy Warhol's massive 3 1/2-hour film Chelsea Girls was meant to be presented on two screens with only one of the two available soundtracks being played (the projectionist could choose which two soundtracks to use). The film had some kind of truncated showing in London soon after the New York premiere in 1966.In 1968 it received its first intact screenings in London, with the two screens simultaneously showing the different reels of film as intended. For that four-day event, pop illustrator Alan Aldridge created this poster for the London Arts Laboratory. The young woman in it is Chare Shentsone, 16, a budding artist who later became close to Francis Bacon. There was an edition of this poster printed in 1968 to be posted outdoors over London. No examples of that 1968 printing are known to have surfaced. Then, in 1970, Aldridge authorized this… Read More

No binding. Very Good. Fine Art Print Vintage original 55 x 78"" (140 x 200 cm.) quattro foglio / 4-fogli poster, Italy. Dana Andrews, Marta Toren, George Sanders, Audrey Totter, dir: Robert Parish; Columbia. Documentary-type film set during the Cold War about a scheming American reporter (Dana Andrews) stationed in Paris and set in the offices of foreign embassies. The poster artist Anselmo Ballester has chosen to focus on the dark, cold war and thriller atmosphere of the story with his portraiture of Andrews, Marta Toren and a menacing police force at night. The Italian title refers to the storyline wherein both reporters (Andrews as Jimmy and Toren as Jeanne) go to follow a story in Budapest of an impending Iron Curtain political conspiracy. Based on a serialized Saturday Evening Post-story by Paul and Pauline Gallico entitled ""Trial of Terror"". It is one of the most interesting of ""anti-Red"" films of the time. Highly dramatic as only the great Ballester could present. On linen, VERY GOOD-FINE.

No binding. Very Good. Fine Art Print Vintage original 55 x 78"" (140 x 200 cm.) quattro foglio / 4-fogli poster, Italy. Elisa Cegani, Frank Latimore, Vira Silenti. Giacomo Verlier, dir: Giorgio Bianchi; Athena Cinematografica / Rank Film. On linen, near fine.
Based on a popular 1920s stage play by Dario Nicodemi, this is the story of a duchess who, for seemingly no reason, despises one of her two sons whom everyone else adores. A dark secret reveals her reasons for animosity.
The artist Anselmo Ballester has created a great aura of suspense in his use of dark shades, the light coming through a slightly open door and the reaction in his portraiture of Elisa Cegani.

The Lion's Roar. No binding. Fine. [Hollywood] MGM, 1941. Vintage original 9 x 12" (22 x 30 cm.) advertising pull-out on cardstock paper, FINE. Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, dir: George B. Seitz, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. For the industry publication The Lion's Roar, caricature artist supreme Jacques Kapralik created this art (originally in three dimensions using elements of yarn, fabric, paper, buttons, sequins and miniature creations) to highlight the themes and elements found in the film's story. Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland are featured in a New York City setting when Betsy Booth (Garland), daughter to a Broadway actress, shows small-town-USA Andy Hardy (Rooney) the ropes of making it in the big city. Garland and Rooney would make solo and Andy Hardy films between the big scale musicals. Ad for film on verso.

Description:
Schulenberg. No binding. Just About Fine. [New York, 1968]. Vintage original 26 x 19 3/4" (66 x 50 cm.) poster. With one horizontal fold and a tiny chip in upper right corner, a minute paper lift in extreme bottom left, a slight bit of wear at fold, just about fine.
Murder à la Mod was Brian De Palma's first feature film. It had a miniscule release. I am only aware of it being played in single movie theaters in New York City and Los Angeles. In both cases, it was shown on a double bill with Paul Bartel's very first film, the short The Secret Cinema. De Palma's film, though a very early effort, is already stylishly shot and edited. And The Secret Cinema (about a woman who comes to learn that her life is being clandestinely filmed and screened secretly) is a cult classic, whose premise was the basis for various other later films.
The poster is a vibrant silkscreen by Schulenberg. Until encountering this poster, I have never seen or heard of any other example of it coming to light.

Margaret Sullavan, Wendell Corey, Viveca Lindfors, Natalie Wood, John McIntire, Ann Doran, dir: Rudolph Mat; Columbia. The ultimate woman's self-sacrifice melodrama with Margaret Sullavan the perfect choice to play such a heroine. This film was the great star actress' swan song to the silver screen. She would appear in just three television dramas during the next few years. The story was about Mary Scott, who is diagnosed with an incurable illness (the word ""cancer"" is actually spoken on-screen). She has ten months to live and wishes to live them to their fullest and take care of the future of her husband (Wendell Corey) and 10-year-old daughter (Natalie Wood). When she discovers that her husband is having an affair with his secretary (Viveca Lindfors), she takes it upon herself to become friends with the woman and ensure that her daughter develops a relationship with her as well.… Read More

Saul Bass designed the poster for this Otto Preminger film, with its iconic image of a woman's face with a huge tear dripping down from her left eye. Bass was a purist and created, in limited editions, special silkscreens which represented the purest versions of his poster art. He originally had a small number of these printed in the 1960s, then had this second printing done in the mid-1980s.

No binding. Very Good. Fine Art Print [Le vieil homme et l'enfant] Vintage original 26 x 35"" (66 x 90 cm.) silkscreen art poster, USA. Our friend, poster collector and dealer Daniel Strebin, provided this information: About a decade ago, he received consignments of Saul Bass silkscreens from the Bass estate. He personally saw invoices for some of them which were printed around 1965. Most of the silkscreens were produced at Art Krebs Studio in Los Angeles. Bass continued to have silkscreens created up until around 1980. All of the silkscreen editions appear to have been in editions of between 50-150. It also seems that once an edition was exhausted, Bass did not make a second edition; as a result, all of these art silkscreens are very rare indeed. Bass never intended for these posters to be sold -- they were intended to be given away. Since he was frequently frustrated with the compromises the film studios inflicted on his magnificent modernist designs, the silkscreens were intended to represent his… Read More

Blystone; Hal Roach/MGM. On linen, near fine. One of the finest of all posters by the legendary artist Al Hirschfeld. MGM employed Hirschfeld numerous times throughout the 1930s to design campaigns for several comedies in his unique caricature art, and particularly for the great comedy team of Laurel and Hardy. Operetta was combined with comedy in this story of two mousetrap salesmen who hope to strike it rich in Switzerland. They are swindled out of their money by a cheese maker and must work off their hotel debt. One way is by moving the piano of an operetta composer (whose chambermaid wife Ollie has fallen in love with) across a rope bridge over the Alpines, a bridge on which they meet a gorilla. Only Stan and Ollie could get into a mess like this. The locations were achieved by filming at Big Bear Lake… Read More
