The second edition of this work in four volumes in a full calf binding, with decorative gilt to the spine. Bookplate to the front paste downs of all volumes. The Gentleman's Magazine was a monthly magazine founded by Edward Cave in 1731. It was successful for almost 200 years, declining only in the early 20th century until it closed in 1922. It was the first to use the term 'magazine' for a periodical, and counted Samuel Johnson among its contributors. Volume I contains researches, historical and antiquarian.
