The second edition of this selection of articles from the successful Gentleman's Magazine, edited by John Walker. The second edition of this work in four volumes in a full calf binding, with decorative gilt to the spine. Bookplate to the front paste downs of all volumes. The Gentleman's Magazine was a monthly magazine founded by Edward Cave in 1731. It was successful for almost 200 years, declining only in the early 20th century until it closed in 1922. It was the first to use the term 'magazine' for a periodical, and counted Samuel Johnson among its contributors. Volume I contains researches, historical and antiquarian. Volume II contains two parts, the first concerning ancient and modern literature, criticism, and philology; the second about philosophy and natural history. Volume III contains two parts, the first comprising of letters to and from eminent persons; the second containing miscellaneous articles, including anecdotes of extraordinary persons, useful projects and inventions etc. Volume IV comprises of biographical memoirs, literary anecdotes and characters, and topographical notices. Each volume has an index to the rear. In a full calf binding. Externally smart, though a lightly rubbed to the joints, extremities and spines. Vols I, II and IV are a little rubbed to the front boards. Front hinges to Vols I, II and III are starting but remain firm; rear hinges to Vols I and IV are starting but remain firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with a little offsetting to the page perimeters of the first and last few pages, and the odd spot. Very Good
