BAL 20116, binding variant A, presumed to be the first one. Original green HC (pebbled) cloth. A good, strong, and still attractive copy with endpapers cracking at hinges though hinges still tight, cloth at spine ends apparently strengthened at some point but now chipped away; few marginal chips to text, and gilt on spine just a little dulled.

Boards show sunning to spine and head edge of front cover, library sticker on spine, mild rubbing to corners, and spine edges chipped off. Text block has bookplate on front pastedown, mild foxing, partial splitting to gutter between pages 146 and 147 and between pages 166 and 167, medium open tear to rear endpaper, and library folder attached to rear pastedown. FE. THOREAU, Henry David. LETTERS TO VARIOUS PERSONS. Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1865. First edition. A most interesting copy, inscribed by Annie Delano to her Uncle Ned on 31 July in the year of publication. An early inscription as the book was not listed for sale until the August 1865. The recipient, Edward Delano was one of President Franklin Roosevelt's maternal grandfather's brothers and Annie Delano was his aunt. There are a few tiny nicks at the head and tail of the spine and some foxing throughout the text, on the whole, however, it is a sturdy pleasing early copy with an interesting pedigree. Publisher's brown cloth, with wreath illustrations stamped in blind, spine lettered in gilt, and brown coated endpapers. Near fine, with light toning to spine and bottom margin of front board, light wear to spine ends, some ink staining to verso of front free endpaper, and text outlined in ink on pp. 74-77. Overall, a sturdy and attractive copy. BAL 20116. Letters to Various Persons is Thoreau's sixth book and the fourth to be published posthumously. Specifically, it is a collection of Thoreau's letters to his friends, written from 1840-1862. This volume compiles a large number of letters written by Thoreau to correspondents such as his sister and Ralph Waldo Emerson, along with nine poems. An exceptional copy, Thoreau's books are rarely found in such beautiful condition. Octavo. Original purple diamond-patterned cloth, spine lettered in gilt, brown coated endpapers, boards blocked in blind with eight-point cornerpieces and central wreath. A superb copy, tight and fresh. First Edition. Modern 3/4 leather binding, spine label, marbled boards. This copy nicely inscribed and signed by 'S. E. Thoreau', [Sophia Elizabeth], at front endpaper. Sophia's autograph is uncommonly rare. She did much of the editing of her brother's posthumous works and was a close companion and confidante of Henry's whilst he was alive. She belonged to Concords anti-slavery society, designed the frontis illustration to Walden, ran the family business and protected Henry's legacy after his death. This copy nicely rebound, staining to lower quarter of early and later pages, some nicking to front endpaper.
