Original brown quarter leather binding; marbled paper over boards with leather corners. Spine decorated with five slightly raised bands separating four gilt tooled compartments and two compartments with gilded stamped lettering. Edges and all endpages are also marbled. Some damage to the spines of volumes 2 and 3. Tight bindings save volume 2, which is broken. Some wear to the boards. Volume 2's front endpages are mostly detached. Pages are clean, mostly unstained, and unmarked save a small pencil mark on the front endpage of each volume. Shelf 1

This is a bound version of the volumes 3 & 4 of the 4 volume set that was put out by R. W. Emerson. The first two volumes were issued in 1838 with an introduction by Emerson (see BAL 5187). The second two volumes were issued in 1839. This may be remainder sheets reissued by the printer. This was issued with a single title page. Also see Dyer page 187. This four volume set (of which this is vol 3-4) would seem to be the all of Carlyle's essays issued to date.
