Description:
(London): Henry Hooper, 1840. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. 8vo, slightly flexible teal cloth stamped covers, good with light ewear to binding, text very good with some foxing to plates and because the book was perfect-bound, i.e. glued, there is some splitting and dryness but pages all seem firmly attached. Bookplates of Mary Elizabeth Hudson and her longtime companion Dorothy Sturges (Hudson was friends with the Irish authors Somerville and Ross and published an early bibliography of them). Some darkening at the inner hinges. Probably a later issue as there is a 16pp. Tilt & Bogue catalogue (somewhat smaller in size than the pages of the book) at rear dated 1841.

A first edition of Thackeray's critical examination of the caricatures of one of the most famous illustrators of the century, George Cruikshank. A fascinating essay on Cruikshank's talent, illustrated with plates and vignettes throughout from his works.Written by English novelist William Makepeace Thackeray. Most renowned for 'Vanity Fair' which satirises life in early 19th century Britain, Thackeray was primarily known for his satires and parodies, criticising high society and the fickle aspirations of its members, such as profitability, marriage and power.Containing the armorial bookplate of Arthur William Bennett. The first edition of this work. In a half calf binding. Externally a trifle worn; some noticeable rubbing to the head and tail of the spine and the extremities. Spine is faded as to be expected, and extremities are bumped. London: Henry Hooper, 1840. First Edition. Very good+ in a recent restoration binding in the publisher's original blind embossed, ribbed cloth covered boards with gilt text on the spine with light yellow end sheets. The rear free end sheet had to be replaced and the original adhesive binding has been restored and reinforced. An octavo measuring 8 1/2" by 5 1/2", The copy was originally an adhesive bound book. The glue used to bind the pages had completely broken down, the hinges were broken and the rear end sheet was missing. The French joints of the boards are now strong and the spine strip is completely intact although there is wear and rubbing to the cloth at the head and heel of the spine. The gilt text on the spine remains bright and undamaged. There is an early prior owner's name neatly written on the front paste down over the date 1841. Bound in at the rear of the book is the 18 page Tilt and Bogues Catalogue. 59 pages of text and illustrated throughout with… Read More
