Boston & New York: Houghton Mifflin Co.,, 1928. First edition, first printing. The book was originally published in 1901 with illustrations by E. Pollack; the Rackham illustrated version was only published in the US. Riall notes that "the text is printed on a poor and brittle paper, so it is a difficult title to find in good condition". Octavo. Original buff cloth, spine and upper cover lettered in black and orange, upper cover with design in black and orange. Frontispiece, decorated title page and 2 full-page illustrations printed in rose and turquoise, with black and white illustrations within the text, all by Arthur Rackham. Contemporary ownership inscription to front free endpaper with bookplate to front pastedown. Head and foot of spine slightly bumped, lower corners slightly rubbed, some light soiling, frontispiece and title page becoming slightly loose; a very good copy. Title page, frontispiece and two full page illustrations in rose and greenish-blue, twenty-six black and white drawings. A Near Fine copy. Dust jacket has edge wear, tears and chips on the edges, corners are chipped/torn, some patchiness, spine and rear are darkened, price has been clipped. Tan cloth boards are decorated with the same art as the DJ, in pale orange and black, boards are rubbed and bumped lightly at the corners, spine has a little wear head/tail, black mark through the author's first name. Bookplate front endpaper. 1929 copyright, no date on title page. This is a 1937 reprint edition with illustrations by Arthur Rackham, the 1901 first edition has illustrations by E. Pollak.
