Packard used his early experience working as a civil engineer on the Canadian Pacific Railway as inspiration for his writing career. 8" x 5 ¾". Grey cloth boards with pictorial front cover featuring a navy blue train with orange cliff side, blue sky, and white titles. White titles and navy blue image to spine. Our copy is missing only the frontispiece but includes: Full title, copyright, dedication, contents, 1-343. Condition: Front cover vivid but paint has light scratches from shelfwear. Image on spine is faded. Bumped corners. Front free endpaper has been professionally replaced. Foxing to endpapers and a touch of foxing to the first third of the pages. Text is clean and unmarked.

Grey cloth hardcover with pictorial cover in black, blue, and brown. Wrapped in mylar sleeve. Some dents to top edges. Spine ends a little softened and spine title faded. A little light soiling with some stains up to p. 9. Canadian novelist Frank Lucius Packard worked as a civil engineer for the Canadian Pacific Railway. His experiences working on the railroad led to his writing a series of mystery novels, the most famous of which featured the character Jimmie Dale. This collection of 15 short stories is Packard's first book. The best-known story, to Canadians at least, may be Shanley's Luck, based on the C.P.R. Beavermouth Riots of 1885 that interfered with construction until the legendary Sam Steele intervened.

Thomas Y.
