About This Item

Toronto: McClelland & Goodchild, [1911]. First Canadian edition. Hardcover. Good +. [6], 343 p. 21 cm. Tissue-protected colour frontispiece by Howard Brown. Grey cloth hardcover with pictorial cover in black, blue, and brown. Wrapped in mylar sleeve. Some dents to top edges. Spine ends a little softened and spine title faded. A little light soiling with some stains up to p. 9.

Canadian novelist Frank Lucius Packard worked as a civil engineer for the Canadian Pacific Railway. His experiences working on the railroad led to his writing a series of mystery novels, the most famous of which featured the character Jimmie Dale. This collection of 15 short stories is Packard's first book. The best-known story, to Canadians at least, may be Shanley's Luck, based on the C.P.R. Beavermouth Riots of 1885 that interfered with construction until the legendary Sam Steele intervened.
