Some spotting, losses to the spine ends and corners of the jacket, else very good. First published in 1940. There is no date printed in the book or on the jacket, nor any contemporary inscriptions. However, the appearance of the book and the fact it was produced according to the "war economy standard" suggests it is a first or early edition.

Head and tail of spine and corners very slightly worn, a few very slight fingermarks, occasional slight foxing. VG+ copy of the FIRST EDITION, lacking dustwrapper. Undated copies are reprints. Light lines to onlay (only visible at certain angles). Front cover ever so slightly bowed. Pencil inscription to front endpaper, small bookseller's ink stamp to front pastedown. Half-title page and last text page very browned. Foxing, mainly to endpapers and page edges. Brown spots affect lower margins on a few pages including one plate. Dustwrapper has loss, mainly from top of spine and lower corner of front panel. Also has a few small tears and is grubby.
