The covers are stained with evidence of early worming and splitting along the rear joint. The cloth is also splitting along the very top of the front joint. 436 pages, plus 6 & [2] pages of the publisher's ads, illustrated with several full-page plates and a folding map. There are occasional corner creases. Good. Volume 2 only of 2 volumes.

"A Narrative of a Three Years' Residence in Japan" (1860 to 1863). Japan was terra incognita, isolated for centuries from the outside world, when the author was appointed the first British Ambassador, arriving in Nagasaki. Culture, language, opposition to foreigners, politics and geography all covered in this first volume. Sir Alcock had had much diplomatic experience previously in China. Brown cloth with gilt title on the spine. Some wear at the spine ends and corners. Inside, hinges tight, no foxing or browning but a few minor spots. Nicely illustrated. .

Volume One only, first edition bound in black cloth with a blind stamp ed design of an oriental mythical beast on the front board, floral des ign on the spine and gold spine lettering. Black & white Illustrations , fold-out map of Japan in near fine condition. A Very Good copy. The corners are lightly bumped and have tiny rub marks. Head of spine has tiny frays. Cloth covers have a few small chips, one is 4cm long and thin and runs at the top edge of the rear board gutter. Two very small chips, 1cm size or less appear on the front gutter of the spine. The spine is split from the cover but the binding is still firm. Gift insc ription penciled on front fly else contents are clean, tight & unmarke d. A solid, clean copy. .
